IMO Depends on the tune. You can get away with not using a HPF on either kick, bass, or the final master if you have programmed carefully, and if the low-low stuff is mixed/synthesized proportionally to begin with. Most 18" club subs are only rated down to 20Hz, and the human ear is responsive down to around 18Hz, so any mix energy you reclaim near that low 20Hz rating is only going to help you get the rest of your track louder and brighter.

I keep hearing that "inaudible" ultrasonic frequencies can potentially cause phase problems, but I have not read nor seen any URLs or dissertations explaining this ultrasound hypothesis, so I'm going to assume it's an urban legend. And as for these frequencies being "felt" instead of heard, well, if the speaker can't reproduce them, then they simply aren't there, and they are only distorting the cones and making them less accurate in their reproduction of the tones between 20Hz and the crossover point.

Keep in mind that just about every club in the world boosts their bass anyway. Request a New Order song, note the lack of bass, and watch how many people dance to it. Bass is easy to overdo and it can totally suck the life out of your track.

I tend to HPF at 30Hz because the HPF I use is 18db/octave and the so called "power" added by retaining ultrasonics is not worth the surprisingly large amount of RMS which is soaked up between 15Hz and 30Hz. In fact I tend to run this HPF on my mains during mixing/programming, and A/B it in and out to help determine how carefully I am programming in the sub range. YMMV.

Just to be the very anoing nitpicker - ultrasound can neither be heard nor felt... Ultrasound has a frequency higher than 20-22 kHz, thus the word ultra...

Frequencies below the hearing-threshold of humans should be labeled infra-sound

about sub basses., :
what i do lately is i leave the subs in there but use a low shelf eq to cut at about 40hz or so.,.
subs DO cloud the mix considerably because they need more amplitude to transfer the same ammount of energy.,
if you shelf it then they will still be picked up by large pa's but they will not steal the bandwidth from higher frequencies so much.,

about ultrasonic.,
they certainly can be heared, but not directly.,
what you can hear is the interference (beating) of ultrasonic waves.,

also sound gets more directional when the frequency is higher (low sounds spread in all directions, but high frequencies can be catapulted in one direction)

some companies use this in their speaker/pa systems to project a better soundfield.,
but i also heared that it is bad for your ears.,
but this was some time ago so i don't know what the recent advanced in the field are.,

i remember one invention that was based on ultrasound.,
someone made a speaker that can project sound onto a surface and you will hear the sound comming from the surface and not from the speaker.,., good stuff huh?.,
long live wave theory.,

anyway,
gotta go.,

I totally misspoke. You are correct.
I meant to say infrasound.
