Im having problems using a highpassfilter
i believe it changes the sound of the instrument so they sound bad.
I´ve started to use a eq instead, but i believe it´s very difficult to know how much to cut in the bottom end on the kick and bass
before you start mixing.
Some advice would be nice

High Pass Filter is Eq that passes only the high frequencies of the signal. Of course it changes the sound, as with every other effect that manipulates the signal.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

In theory, a filter can only cut while an EQ can both cut or boost.

In most digital eqs, the first and last bands are set to filters.

Some EQs and Filters work MUCH better than others...but cutting with a HPF band of an EQ or using a filter should be the same...

dont forget resonance is boost
so if i wanna make my hihat to have more of the 16000hz a LP filter with cutoff on 100% open and some resonance will make boost           www.sattelbattle.com

Best is not to eq before mixing, but to eq while mixing. Often sounds sound good while they play alone but they sound bad in the mix. So play the elements of the track together and mix then, and u will get a good overall result.            Signature

it depends on the type of hp filter u are using.
if like tsabeat said, its a filter with resonance than for me its more of a soundesign tool, not a sound cleaning tool.

For cleaning and getting the right sound for the mix, an eq or hp without resonance (like logic's low cut/high cut modules) is the way.

In general, I clean the f00k out of everything (not kickbass). For most sounds I clean everything under 400 with logic's simple low cut module, and then use a eq to refine the higher freqs.

Kick/Bass is much more "mix dependant" and I have less of a general rule when eqing these, but I always shelve at least 30hz off both.

Keep in mind that if you cut the low harmonics, it increases the gain of the high harmonics, and vice-versa.

every plug in you open - change the sound of the signal.
most of the times i prefer to cut with Eq but sometimes i like the sound and color of the filter so i use filter (for example L SONAKLISS filter)
On kick & bass i use only eq and usually cut under 32hz.

after eq the sound sounds different but you should know that the loe freq comes with the kik and the bass.

you dont need the low frequencies of every sound..and as a matter of fact most of the time they just get in the way.and if it realy buthers you-dont cut use high shelf filter and this way you will still have few lows left:)

as far as mixing-i dont think there is a best way..you just need to do what you think sounds good and servs your project..you can eq while making the trak just to get rid of the low fres(they sure are annoing and making mud:)and then after your project is finished you can start mixing from scratch..its like a clean start just for the mix..different stage of your creation..and new state of mind is required.

remember:first try cuting/filtering not boosting.
second-when you boost/cut its gonna effect other sounds..boosting can create masking..cutting will implify other sounds.

cheers
