A trick which can save a lot of time when eq-ing kick and bass to get them to fit is this one: Check which notes the bass-synth is playing and use a frequency-chart http://www.phy.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html to find out which frequencies these notes are at. Next, place an equalizer on the kick and use it to dip those frequencies the bass is playing. This way you make place for the bass-notes. Next, find out which predominant frequency the kick is in (a frequency analyzer can come in handy), place and eq on the bass-synth channel and use it to dip the predominant frequency(s) of the kick. Tweak the amount and the width of the frequency dips a little to make the kick and the bass fit snuggly. Eq-ing with some frequency knowledge about the signal can save you a lot of time.
Hope this one is of some use,

Or just use sidechain compression

Mike A: you're right Sidechain compression may be useful for compressing the bass so 'ducks' the initial resonant higher frequency-peak of the kick. However, you may still need to take care of low frequency clashes between the kick and the bass. |
