I got a tip from someone who told me to highpass my hats at 5000hz..He said it would make them a lot cleaner and get rid of d bad low frequencies..
I don't know if this is such good advice though..So i wanted to ask how do you guys eq your high hats?
I usually highpass them at 800hz and then boost a lil in the high frequencies..

i there mate , now its something that depende severelly of what are u searching from your hats
im actually EQ them to get a nice sweep on the high freq , but a bit of 1300 to 3000 hz up as well ,to give them a nice power on hat , also then i send it to a bus were all high freq percursion are ,were i have there a 31 band EQ were i deline a spectrum were i want the high freq percursion have they'r poweer , then a compressor , with short attack and release , treshold -6 to -9 , with a ratio 4.0.1
and i find my new ones fucking killa
i can send u a bounce of percursion if u want to see

My tip is to highpass rolling hihats and other high-end sounds percussion at around 3000 Hz for tightness...
Open hihats are abit different though, it depends on how you want them to sound. I like them to sit just abit above central in the mix so they're nice and clear.
Highpass percussion safely anyway, even if you have good samples which sound "high".
I remember having problems with some seemingly random frequency clashes in a previous track. After trying to listen for ages wht it might be, i decided to opt for the paz analyser.
Turned out that one of my closed hihats although sounding high had a surprisingly broad frequency coverage, including the bass region as well. Abit of highpassing fixed it in no time.

play your bass, kick and percursion channels, hi pass each of your percursion channels so that there's minimal difference on the bassline when you play it with the percursion. now lowpass them (especially the open hi) at really high frequencys with a bit of Q... gives a nice effect and clears out some air of the hats. now add a parametric boost and a hi shelf boost to make the hats stronger.
oh don't forget also to lowpass your kick and bass also at arround 3000hz-5000hz. now compress, distort a little bit, add slight reverb (minimum tail) and stereo enhancers. now your track flies |

thanks guys some great tips here!
Dark Psy i really wouldn't mind seeing that sample! sounds like you put a lot of effort into your percussion..I have a question though when you compress all your high freq percussion does this include the snares as well?

5000 hz is too high a freq for highpass filter man , !
who ever is giving u this adivce , i dont know , what he is doing ... anyways ,
usually what i do is , roll off the lows and low mids , and then boost in the high mids and highs .... rolling off starts from 600-800hz , depending on the sample and track requirements ... |

Nolightatend was the most precise about no EQing. I almost follow that rule altho I like to beef up the 5000, 8000, 10000, 12000, 16000 depends on the sample ( not all of them at once yeah )
About rolling off at 3000 / 5000 hz u just kill the sample, it is gonna be one hell of a castrated high hat after that.
the 800's are so important for a good high hat sound and the lows like 400hz and even 200hz are damn important for certain percussion elements such as low Conga drums etc.

S Cube Low Pass all the synths (give the higher for your hats only), increase their volume (they're called lead for some reason), and don't forget to stereo enhance everything.
personally i don't like to take much from the hats, a well low\high passed lead will seat good |
