pick a snare that cuts through the mix. maybe cut the sub-bass area.
from what i've read, the snare sounds best overlaying most of the freqeuny range, with perhaps some boost here and there to clarify.

as for FX,
i've had good result with a bit of distortion (it also helps bringing the peak down while keeping the loudness)

i'm curious what others do

For a snappy snare I should highpass around 200hz, then a smooth boost around 6-7Khz for more clarity and if you want more bottom boost a litlle around 300hz.
Then put a nice wet reverb with a(noise)gate (like floorfish) after it on your fx channel, set the attack of the gate to zero and set release a bit open.
Then just tweak the treshold to your taste.
peace!

Do any of you cut the top of a snare frequency, so the hats sit over it clearly?           www.wizanda.com www.soundcloud.com/wizanda

i cut much more of the lows...
i think around 300-400hz or even higher there is this bongosound...
i know this is essential, but this noise fuck up my mix often xD

also layer a snare with a clap for good sound           www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

Depends on the sample.

You have been told the overall process:

- Cut lows
- Boost a little where the snappieness of your sample is

Remember everything starts out with a nice nice sample

This image should give you an idea. Below the keyboard are the descriptions of what each area of the sound sounds like (so boosting will bring out more of that quality):

I know it sucks to get this response, but you just have to use what sounds right in the context of the track. Use something that sounds pleasing to your ear and eventually your ear will become smart enough to make sense out of what that is . If you want more punch in the track, pick a punchier snare, if you want more "shine", pick one with more high end.

Snare is a lot of personal preference. I've had people give me good comments on tracks I've made and say that they don't like the snare. It sticks out a lot, so definitely don't overlook it.

for the snappy part raise some 4.5khz-6khz
to fill the sound add 100hz-250hz
some dirt/in your face effect can be found arount 1khz
and to get more presence 6khz-8khz can help

actually in my tracks i HP them around 80-120hz so they wont mess with my kick..

dont be afraid to try out some extreme settings (if you think you like the sound), but dont forget you did it hehe
imo only selfexperience takes you further in this topic.

you can use those charts, sure... but they also can limit you!

Being a noob is great! Everything is new and shinney!

For that snare sound... you know, somehow your brain "knows" which one is the right snare. After years of dancing to psytrance beats believe your ears will tell you "that's the one" when looking for drum samples.

Try gettin your hands on some of the Vengeance or Ueberschall libraries...

Personally i like snappy tight snares that sound just like a "KAHHH" hehe... like with a spanking feel to it
