EQ for Sound Shaping vs. EQ for Mixing

ello everyone

Just a quick question/thought

Okay as I see it there are 2 types of EQing

1. There is EQing to make sounds fit together in a mix. Such as removing frequencies that are not needed or to make a sound use a smaller range to make it fit with the other sounds.

2. Creative Shaping EQ. Such as EQing an individual sound to make it have the sound and shape you want it to have, or to bring out certain areas of a sound that really make it shine.

..........

Okay so my question has to do with number 2.
There is plenty of info about number 1 floating around everywhere.

I guess I just want to know if the same rules apply to #2 as do to #1. I mean do you still only want to make sharp cuts and wide boosts?

More or less what I would like to know is, are there any tips for this type of eqing? What should you look for to bring out a sound? Or to make that sound warm and sparkly and bold? Are there things in particular that ruin a sound?
I know this might be a difficult question, but if you can think of anything, any tips that are things you turn to on a regular basis in regards to eqing for individual sounds, please share them.

Thanx,
~Airyck~

IMO, there is no difference between 1 & 2.

But no, I don't really think there are any hard and fast rules on how to EQ sounds 'easily', just what sounds good, and experience - the application is always different, as the source content is always different!           .

This is kinda what I figured as well, but since I have nobody to learn from here, then I thought that I would ask, because I have no way of knowing otherwise.           ~Airyck~

After far too long putting stupid boosts and cuts on all my sounds and having them good individually, but shit in the mix - I simplified to high pass if high, low pass if low and picking sounds that didn't obviously clash in frequency (obviously thats a bit simplified too - but that's the basic formula) only at the end of the song do I do number 2 and fill out the frequency's where required.

Well I said that was the basic method. I check on an analyser for any problem peaks, but generally I use my ears and try to listen out for stand-out annoyances.

I'm much better at removing bad stuff, than adding a nice quality to a sound. I like giving a bit of boost at the ends of high/low passes to give the illusion of more bottom or top.

mmm, totally, try using shelving filters instead of peaks for that, I'm convinced that these are the way forwards for placing a sound in the mix. When used with a LP or HP, you can get a lot of control over how the overall sound is adjusted, a bit more like the top and bottom bits from a 'graphic equalizer' on a stereo.           .

I disagree,
I like to boost pads and fx sounds in the high regions aklot to give them more "shimmer".
Also sometimes i modulate the the eq, either within my synth (velocity eq, enevelope stuff) or thru the automation ona p0lugin eq. you can get cool stuff with that and its not an effect so much as part of the sound.
Work like you don't need the money.
