Yet another question requesting answers to an impossible question.. This totally depends on the the sound of your bass, there is NO picture than can help you, only practice and ear training. Also, I may suggest that other peoples basslines sound better because you haven't been listening to them as a solo'd loop for 2 hours without the rest of the track, add mastering to that and you're unlikely to get the sound you're trying to copy.
Possible personal tricks of pros to get a more a solid/chunky/cutting/round bassline are overdrive, quadrafuzz and compression. Again, there are no ideal settings, only listening and trying for yourself. Personally I think a good bassline all starts in the envelopes and synth programing - the sounds above the bassline also make the overall track 'work'
The melodies and percussion for example - all help contribute across the frequency spectrum, so don't be too dissapointed if your bass doesn't sound fantastic in solo.
I believe most prodcuers of this genre start with kick and bass - one thing I used to do was make a bassline that I was adequately happy with and just forget about it - make the track. Then tweak it later. At least that way you get stuff done, learn some new things and don't waste weeks trying to get a sound you don't have the skills to realise how to get. It is all about listening and learning, and it takes a while before eq skills start to form - so keep practicing. You're training your brain to hear new things.. so practice!
For starters.. Try cutting a standard sawtooth bassline around 200-500 to get rid of hum and mud, low pass above 3500. If someone disagrees following this post, its their own preference.. but I think this is a good place to listen and learn. |

first of all , thx for your help , you said many right things.my biggest problem is that i don't know what you and others mean by "cut" frequencies , how do i cut them ?
if i'll understand this i'm sure my bassline will be much better. |

cutting means to lower the gain of a particular frequency / frequency range. the opposite would be to boost. a highpass filter cuts all the frequencies below any given point, leaving only the high frequencies..
cheers.. |

I think they mean cutting the high harmonics.
I do this with the waves bundle EQ'S.
I don't even compress my bass
It's not only equi'ing your bass tho i find,it's how you eq the rest of the track and how it will make your bass stand out.
all i got on it is waves EQ and sometimes a sonic maximiser,I find the enveloppe is what is most important !
but this is for my bass.
www.myspace.com/kodesix check it out to see what i mean ( but these are also masterd) wich gives way more kick to it all.

hey shai!
cutting frequencies on a EQ plugin is only the fact of reduce some frequency's parameters..
i do my bass this way:
1) Choose the kick, put it's volume on -9dB and see what's it's root note
2) Load Tau 2 or Tau Pro and make a small and basic bassline together and put it on a loop together with the kick.
3) tweak the VSTi's knobs until it sounds good
4) Load Waves RBass on Tau channel. The frequency is 70 and the left diagram (i'm not at home now, so i cant remember it's name) is -15
5) Load a equalizer and adjust it until sounds good. Usually i cut something around 500 and only a few of the low frequencies..
6) Tweak the VSTi's knobs again to adjust it.
Hope i can help you... and sorry for my bad english... =P |

attenuating a frequency that is nasty. Try using an eq and set a bandpassfilter @ a q setting of 90-100, then raise the filter so the frequency you dial through is loud. Find a frequency that is annoying and make it less loud (attenuate) by 6 db or more. Also try raising the frequencies that sound nice. Last and not least, make a highpass filter @minimum 30hz and you are almost there...
