if u use a good dist over the bass (isotope trash f.e.) u wont need comresion at all but if u have a kik with a longer tail and a high bpm u'll need a slight compresion mostly for the sidechain process between the kik and the bass. But this is all relative. U can achieve great sound also without compresing...

hello me n00by doo here. Well long time reader etc.
Anyway whats with the love of VB1? theres a very strange relationship with it in this place. some of the sounds people are getting out of it are awesome, proper effort. anyway. ill slip off now

I guess because VB1 has been used in lots of good tracks, and its best feature is that it is sample based, so when you play a note, it'll always sound the same, as opposed to free running oscillators in some vsts. Which can give a desirable result.
It's just a tool though, no need to worship it
