A lot of people swear by this and I think I'll start using it as well. Yesterday I was playing about with it and got a great sound but I have no idea what I done EQ/Compressor wise. I am playing with it now but it sounds to "plucky" and the bottom end sounds nasty. |

I tried for a year to get a good sound out of VB1. It wasn't until I sorted out my room acoustics I could hear what I was doing. It isn't the most original sound but it does its job.
Your EQ is going to be different for the note you pick, but I wrote a track in E and these are some basic settings for the note E1. Adjust to taste.
Try rolling off about 3.5k,
large cut at 1000hz, 500hz
small cut at 125hz, 250hz, 2000hz |

And how about the settings on the VB-1 Tomos? Makes no sense to have an eq preset without knowing the initial sound.

Well, this is down to taste I suppose. But you have a point.
I just pushed the plectrum and fret (is that the right word) to the furthest left and put Damper at 15 and Shape at 0. |

Why do you cut so much? nothing will left from the original sound! |

Sounds okay to me, you think thats too much? These are fairly narrow notches, not wide chunks. By large, I mean about -6dB |

There are plenty of bass options. Who cares what you use, one element of your track doesn't make it.
Saying VB-1 is dead is ridiculous, its just a sound.
You could say the same thing about 303 acid squeaks, we've had 20 years of that! |

Is it double-dead? Seriously, why post such crap.. if you can get a great sound out of it then its never dead... if it does the job for you, use it!
Anyway, I was going to say don't forget to play around with the note lengths and velocities, it makes a big difference on the VB.
Good luck!

i usually boost and not cut..
maybe below 35 hz and above 10k -12k.
if nececery than i cut just a bit in the low mid area around 400hz - 600 hz.
freq`s like 125 or 250 i even boost somtime..depands on the bass note.

i record than the vb-1 to an audio file and cut it in each note. than you can change the volume and fade exactly.
also try to change the phase of the bassline.. sometimes its good!!

I found something very important for the vb1. its the longitude of your notes. make them as short as posible. like 1/96 and than play (but very carefully) with the release time of the vb. if u put normal 1/16 long notes, the sound is not convincing. But if u use very short notes (but on the sixteens place), put the "sinthy bass" preset, and play with the release (put it like 0,970 aprox) and the decay, than u put the isotope trash over it and use it like this: just the "Trash" as a mulitband compresor, u have to add one more band so that u have 4 in total, the first band and the last band u have to eliminate all from it, lower every knob! (it will be like a low-high cut for you bass) than on the second and third band put the "DRVE - SQUEALER" and play with the knobs (overdrive, mix, caracter) until u get good fat bass. Put your notes on the 1st octave, C1 - C2, additionally u can turn on the pre or the post EQ of Trash and make small changes on the EQ, be carefull, just small changes. in the end u can put a sidechain compressor so that the kik and bass fit better and send them both to a RCOMP bus where u can still fatten a bit the sound.
If u make this configuration u'll notive that VB is not dead, but more alive than ever
sure there are a dozen more of trickies so that the bass is fatter and stronger but this is for some othe rpost.
happy tweaking
