as for me, i eq on the first step and compress on the last.
e.g. if it is a vst lead i set 'online' eq then some effects and then compress it.
if it is an audiotrack with some audio fx samples, then i eq the samples in 'offline' then give effects on the whole audiotrack where the last step in the effects chain is compressor.

hey billy , its really simple man .... and of course the whole thing makes sense , once you really know what it is that you want to do with the sound ....
ok , so when you first eq and then compress the signal , basically you're just cancelling the processing that the eq did to the sound ,coz as you know .. the work of the compressor is to make the dynamic range of the signal more uniform ,
so lets say u in the eq u gave boost of +3db @ 1k , 3, and 500 hz ... when u sent this signal to the compressor and the compressor " sees " peaks in the signal @ 1k , 3, and 500 hz ..... and if u set ratio t0 3:1 , with the right threshold .... do u understand what u did ? u just reversed the eq that u did on the signal in a different way !!!
but now , case2 ..... first u use compressor and already limit the dynamic range of the signal .... and then when u apply eq @ 1k, 3k, and 500 hz ... they should be more prominent in the sound , coz rest of the frequencies have already beenn kinda "squahsed" ..............
most of the time .... i use compressor and then eq .... or even better is to use an eq as a sidechain to the compressor , so that ure only compressing the frequincies that you want / dont want .... depending on how you set up the sidechain eq signal .....
hope that helped ...
respect .. chandan ! |

EQ
Compressor
EQ
This is the way to go, sometimes one of the eqs can fall away.
It is better to eq resonant and unwanted freqs before compressing, so the compressor can also work better.
For example if u compress a bass u should cut all freqs below ~20hz before, so u get better compressing result.

there aint no rules regarding the sequence of EQ and Compressor
supposedly its Compress>EQ but you may need to EQ before compressing the sound and maybe you don't need to EQ after compression...
use your ears to judge whats good
