What makes you by an ep? It has just few tracks, and most of the Ep's tracks will be released in the albums so why bother?
Of cores there are very worth eps to by Like Infected Mushroom & Barry Sakharof - Birthday, which was one of the rare commercial things with good music. This is all times best seller ep (all styles of music) in Israel. Also the B.P.Emprie Ep is a must. It is extension, form my pov, of the album.
So what makes you by an ep?

hm, just to get some more information.
How many CD5"'s does the people around here own?
Me and my CD5":
Infected Mushroom - Birthday
(Bought it because of "unreleased" tracks. Boy did I not love these singing tracks. Maybe they would sound better if I knew Hebrew)
Infected Mushroom - Deeply Disturbed
(Bought it because of the Violet Vision remake and because of what Psycosmo said above)
Infected Mushroom - B.P Empire
(Bought it because, well, hello! See the two tracks. Genius! Track one and three is worth alot. "Roll Me A Giant" is HUGE)
I also got a couple of LP Singles. One Violet Vision and one from Dragonfly Records. I bought both of them because they where almost free. I don't even have a record player. Still nice to own though.

Personally I think they are useless and inefficient, especially in a scene where compilations jam-packed with close to 80 minutes of sound are the norm.
I did end up buying a few in the last couple years, however.

With digital download services around, I think the days of CD5" releases are pretty much numbered.
