i've really come to the conclusion now that so many producers hide behind stop-starts, rolls, rises after rises, and such.
I belive that good trance, and good music in general do not need gimmicks. Of course the structure of our music dictates a necessary amount of break pauses, and a well placed rise of course does wonders. But c'mon, write MUSIC...take the time to evolve complementary sounds, evolve themes, and draw the dancer into something musical.
but then again we live in an age where the barrier to entry is so low for production that people simply learn to copy others, sort of like a trade. You can still find qualitiy, and they typically are real trained musicians. And they don't use a lot of gimmicks, just right good parts and lines that just keep coming at you.

That's why they're called producers and not musicans
Seriously though, who cares what other people do. I'm not about to tell someone what they can and can't do with their DAW. |

man, started cubase and wanted to try out what you said,but......
recognized that this is better put to trance section, as its no discussion concerning help with production or equipment... its something general |

People are free to produce/compose whatever they want as long as they do not use dBlue Glitch because my ears are so tired of hearing tracks featuring it.

i pretty much agree with you there... too many breaks and you lose the whole hypnotic definition of trance.

definitely! this is what I recognized while I have been working on my latest track. I made a lot of breaks (it's fun to play around ) but meanwhile I deleted them all, because they killed the flow.

Duh....of course
I'm not telling anyone what to do. If everyone wants to copy Eskimo, they sure can and I'm not going to stop them. I'm not disrepsecting Eskimo, its just not 'trancey' to me.
I'm just expressing annoyance at the prevalance of tricks over solid content.
Just my opinion.
i'd like to see more hypnotic flow back into trance. For example, I am good pals and work on music and mastering over at geomagnetic studios with my pal Random. I heard him mastering Shapestatic and I gotta say I loved how the music just evolved and spoke for itself.

I'm not a big fan of the dropping the beat and then hitting it back hard as I just find myself standing there waiting. But I think there's nothing wrong with a little musical punctuation here and there, like throwing in a couple of extra kicks. Especially with the one note bass tracks it adds a little spice to what would be a non-descript groove as long as it doesnt interupt the flow. |

all those drum rolls and tricks and crappy movie samples make me want to throw up...ive pretty much stopped listening to the bulk of psy because of it. I get my 'trance' from prog now, but i wish there was more psy that kept a trancey groove going.
one psy album i heard recently that definitely isn't hiding behind cheap tricks is the new Prometheus album 'corridor of mirrors', very musical and trancey as well as being well produced. |

thats hilarious, and being from the states myself I know what you are talking about, and I find it refreshing to hear from time to time the traces of a rich, vibrant, and growing underground scene there ( I live in Japan now..)
regarding this whole topic, I agree and especially at parties it gets tiring to here the same techinique cliched and used over and over again. however, it does work on the dancefloor.. but then again other things do too..
in the end overused and cliched techniques in production is what will separate the cream from DJ fodder, so best to be original!

Yeah I really really like a few of those Geomagnetic guys, specifically Chromatone, Random, and Ocelot. They make some dense stuff. Random came up and played at a party here in Vancouver, it was neat. |

Agreed.
I'm fed up with the entry level dance music also.
Your album was nice btw. |

Some breaks are well done and drag you into the next section while keeping the flow going. Others just... err... break the flow. And often the breaks are just too long.
So my main objections isn't that there are breaks but rather that some breaks just don't flow.
So Chromatone are/is American? I like the last album! I need to check out Random and Ocelot.
