I found this list of Emotions of Musical Keys.
It tells you what emotions you associate with each musical key.

http://www.gradfree.com/kevin/some_theory_on_musical_keys.htm

It might come handy in picking the 'right' key in order to evoke certain emotions with your music.

I dont agree to this chart at all! Well i think D minor can be very sad indeed, but not everything is one thing.
Like aciduss say, its very subjective and i find music to happen in more than one chord and its this journey between the chords or single keys that sets the emotion, that makes the journey... and what it all develops to.

Otherwise i think only single long held tones speak more emotion, or as moodsetters, and preferably layered with melody ontop with different elements playing around.

im too tired to be more specific

Animals and babies use white notes to express emotion and black for rhythm, so that table doesn't make sense.           www.wizanda.com www.soundcloud.com/wizanda

I heard already this things from expirienced musicians.I believe this is very old description ,atleast they exist for centuries.I remember some moods that other told me more than a decade ago exactly like this,just in other language.I think this is interesting.And yes of course I agree this can all be subjective - but there is for sure some truth in description of this moods.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

i smell bullshit. >99% of people cannot tell the difference between (e.g.) D minor and D# minor if they have no reference to compare to.

besides that, electronic music is mostly played in dj-sets, so our tracks will be played in other keys than intended (or even between two keys) anyway...

there's no way that piching up a track up just a little bit will make to mood change from "melancholy, womanliness" to the "anxiety of the soul's deepest distress"

I doubt that I think a diffrence between a white key and black key is also simple.I agree for techno djs it can be a bit confusing though.Maybe not for almost all of them.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

i'd doubt that too.

major and minor feel different (depending on what you do), but the keys..

in dance music i'd stick to a key so that i can fit the bass notes into a frequency range that suits well.

if you pitch a track one half step, there is no emotional difference.           www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

well maybe a whole track, but not a note in a melody that makes all the difference.

When you can combine happiness with sadness in a track, that to me is good composition!           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

+1
Lets do a track called "mixed emotions" hehe

But this is very hard to do, and do it well.

So Chaos and order,
Consonance and Dissonance
Sadness - happiness
Worry - Unworried
Dark - Light

So they will reinforce each-other, So if you want to communicate/express Sadness you go from either a natural state of being, or happiness, maybe not straight to sadness but a little worry in between(done with timbre and instrumentation), or a state of confusion, i think there needs to be a bridge over to the next one,
And in story telling, " i was happy, everything was beautiful, but then this sad thing happened" Or " There was Chaos, but then order came" All these thing are reliefs or not, (as in "a distinct or abrupt change in mood, scene, action, etc., resulting in a reduction of intensity, as in a play or novel")

It very interesting to just sit down with a nice string sound a try different colorings of the chords. And having a complete classic instrumentation and its much more easy to use timbres to reinforce emotions or happenings, I should probably create more classical stuff when i come to think of it, i love to do that stuff.

here is a piece i did some years ago, but i think it has some interesting emotions, take a listen, Must add, red vine and candles was involved in the creation, hehe, Edirol Orchestral and Yamaha An1x as midi keyboard

@2:25
dark arrival

@2:34
some darmatical hope in the dark again

really nice! ive gotta post my gangsta metal phillharminic track too, there is also a very melancholical part in it, and then the mood is changing

i have this ploblem with a psy track at the moment, i have 2 leads with different scale (but only white notes in both and same root key). i cant switch from one to the next becaus it sounds like a new track >.<          www.soundcloud.com/orgytime
