Samples are nice to bring in the final 'wheee' of the track. A pitch envelope bending the pitch up or down can sound cool. A panning envelope that makes the sample swirl around, tightening up right before you drop the wheeeee in...
I usually like to have more than 1 element doing the elevating, like a highpass cutting a synth out as the LP filter on teh kick/bass send brings the bass up out of the murk, maybe some random sample playing behind it all, then maybe some kind of percussion element or kick staccato, or oneshot sample like a gunshot or gong or something, or whatever sounds good.
Sometimes I elevate without going into a breakdown, progressively building layers that drive the mix harder and harder, outlining the overall rhythm more and more clearly. Sometimes I break down, bring back the foundation and backing rhythm instrument(s), then build up on that til it climaxes... I try not to use the same sort of builds or breakdowns in more than one track.
