hi all,
thinking of getting one of these over the next couple of days to complement my studio.. anyone have any experience with it for producing psy..
how does it sound etc ?
does it sync nice with cubase for new forms of sequencing ideas in a slave setup activating riffs and pattterns ??
heard its a bit digital and cold, but it should work nice with a Virus TI no ??
thx

A bit complicated machine, since Elektron have their own names for many parameters it can be a slightly confusing machine at start.
It does sound cold and digital but perhaps in a good way...
The sequencer is what really does it. Insanely creative piece with parameterlocks on every step (as many as you want), just as machinedrum.
I own a Machinedrum and a Sidstation which I never will part from! Next is a Monomachine, when possible, to complete the fantastic Elektron collection.
In my world, I want my instruments (synths) to differ from each other and the Monomachine is different from anything I tried, thats why I want it!
Since my setup is filled with warm old analogs the colder harsher Monomachine will fit perfect in my studio bringing a new dimension.
Eventhough the Elektron stuff is maybe oriented more for electro and techno, it (you) sure can do psy too.

I'll back up yggster here.
I have MonoMachine and it's the main piece of my computer-free studio.
The sound on MM is quite cold and digital, many times even harsh. It can sometimes be hard to fit it in the mix unless you apply some equalisation and compression. It definitely differ a lot from TI or Nordlead - so it will complement your TI pretty nicely (I have Virus C which I use for that analogish warm trance stuff).
I'd say it's very capable of doing some crazy psy/trance sounds, but it's at its best in IDM/electro/progressive/techno. I mainly do progressive/tech-house-kind-of-stuff with it. I might send you a short "psyish" clip to demonstrate it.
Unfortunately none of the synthesis methods in MM are phase-locked, so it can't produce that solid full-on bass. It's a pity really, because the FM synth and the SID emulation can create some really nice basses. But if you have something like Virus or MicroQ, you can always use MM to sequence it.
If you use MM as a sound module, I think you'll miss 50% of it's features (which is the insane sequencer with parameter locks). Real-time adjusted modulation features in MM are not that flexible when compared to, for example, Virus. It is the sequencer that brings the sound into life. Also the very flexible and USABLE user interface is part of the charm.
It's pretty hard to describe MM in just few sentences. You really need to spend time with it to grasp the sheer number of possibilities it has to offer. (And sound demos in the MM webpage do not make justice for it!)
Anyway, it is the best piece of hardware I've ever owned (which isn't saying much, but still). I'm in the process of getting MDUW for Elektron, so the situation might very well change in the future
Hope this helps. |

hey yggster and texmex, thanx for the very indepth reviews.. in the end, the guy selling one wasn´t up for a bargain (he was trying to sell it for more than its original retail price) so I decided to wait.. Inbetween my new little phatty arrived to keep me happy..
I really think the monomachine can help in composition, i dream of them loops synchronised... will keep you informed if one comes to me soon...
tex, you mentioned that the synths arent phase locked.. I would have thought a simple full on bassline was possible with the standard saw synth that comes included..i understand that the method of phase locking is for soft changing of parameters sequenced in time...
to tell you the truth, this is one reason why i looked at the mono, for extracting nice easy to programme basslines..seperate from my daw and ti...
i would love to hear some samples if you have anything handy..
many thanx...
