so , a recently banned thread here dealt with a potentially controversial topic , hitler something .. anyway , my random thought that led me to open this tompic ..
is it even possible for electronic music to have a message ? .. pro this , anti that , whatever ..
for me , in trance etc , random samples can work great and you could theme a track around it , or , find a fitting sample to fit into whatever you may have going .. but it remains a smallish part of the whole. sure , you could name a track cleverly around a spoken word sample , but can it have a "message" .. like in a song .. to everyone , not just the composer/creator ?
not that's its important for any music , whatever genre , to have a message or anything ... some music only ?

why is hitler popular in the four courners of the world?
you have your answer, the other topic i think it was blocked so no further political discussions could start

Yes it is pretty common... don't you listen to psytrance? Lots of samples and ideas on everything from goblins to conspiracy theories.
Many tracks about one becoming crazy and drug use for example... is fun. |

Pretty sure that he knows that samples are used, but the way I read the post he was asking if it is possible for those samples/some tracks to go beyond just being silly or funny or dancey and to 'actually mean something'
Personally one of the reasons I like psytrance is that that message or 'meaning' is specific to the listener. You create your own reality and you can interpret things in the tracks as you see fit. It's not like you have some singer rabbiting on about his shitty love life or how life sucks - 99.9% of the time song lyrics do not resonate with me at all, but for some reason trippy sounds do.
You can imbue your track will all the meaning and message in the world but in the end it's up to the listener.
For me, it's obvious that tracks can have meaning. If they didn't I wouldn't have had so many amazing emotional/inspirational moments on the dancefloor. Why is it that one track can evoke such a depth of feeling and emotion and another leave me flat?

^ sure , same for me , honestly .. jim morisson rambling on about some lizard crap seemed very fucking retarded on acid when i heard that , as did floyd(apart from the solos) .. lol , electronic music . and psy in particular gives each person their own space to do their own "walk down the hallway" (acid or any other drugs involved or not)
... but my question remains ,
... can you put a "message" in there (like a song) , or its not possible .. again , not that their has to be one anyway .
ill like any specific genre of music for whatever it is , metal for example .. love children of bodom ... just don't have any idea what they singing

it's totally possible.
What I find even more interesting is the listener creating and finding their own message in a track that you didn't consciously intend
For instance, when I posted one of my earliest tracks to facebook an old high school friend said it gave him visions of running through an 8 bit alien landscape as some sort of ninja, going on an epic quest of some sort.
Not exactly a 'message' - but I still thought it was pretty cool.
I bet if I'd put in a bunch of Terrence quotes and samples blaming it all on the aliens then that might never have materialized because I was influencing the listener's mind 'too much' with samples and therefor reduced the amount of 'world/message/story' creation that they have to do.
Samples are a fickle bitch - its super tempting to try to force someone down a particular path that you find interesting.

i agree with that. according to my taste: samples can have a messsage but there should be enough space for the listener to have his/her own interpretation. they are best if they are ambigious (dont know how to write that word but its like a rorschach test, the perceiver makes his own interpretation in it). clear messages without space for interpretation annoy me, even if i agree with the message itself. it makes things flat. |

just like everything in music, it's subjective. I may rail against hand-holding in samples...but would Hallucinogen - LSD be as special to me without the sample?
Things done well sound cool.
