For the price too you could look at the sampling line of electribes.
There certainly is an advantage to a real drum machine UI, not the least is being able to use 2 hands, 8 fingers and 2 thumbs instead of a mouse pointer.
For psy loops though I just don't think its worth it for machinedrum, if you were looking to do a minimal techno live pa that might be a different story.

It's a beautiful piece of hardware that is unique and exquisitely crafted, in my opinion..
I wouldn't listen to people telling you X piece of hardware isn't "good for psy" etc. There's no reason why you couldn't make amazing psytrance with any piece of hardware, people who tell you otherwise are just limiting in general.
Truly a boring and non-psychedelic way to look at music..
SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE though.

I have the Machinedrum m Uw and its a real beast at what it can do. You can assign 16 samples to invidiual slots on which u can do individual parameter tweaks for every hit on the Grid..think precise automation here...! You can set sample start and end positions on the sample and all other common sampling parameters . You have 16 LFO's which can be assigned to the sample start and end points along with the obvious filter , pitch mods etc...I tried out the iDM video above on this and it creates endless random sounds like Buffer Override. Its a versatile Sequencer to make really inspiring loops + it has a rock solid Sync which i tested works well with my Akai Mpc , but couldnt get results in software however this doesnt bother me ,what does is that it has only a 2.5 mb sample memory which is way lesss for todays standards, transferring files over Midi is hell lot slow too. But its a drumachine and sample hits are in very small kbs then Mbs anyway.
Soundwise its very Cold, mechanical and Digital Sounding, wether thats bad or good is your choice .On the effects side It has delay,Reverb,Compressor ,distortion ..
its awesome for live use because of its sync , but only paired with another hardware , it can also send midi to your synthesizers .... I havnt tested with ABleton but there are reported sync issues .
Now only if they increased the Sample Memory and connectivity via USB and its Godlike ..

Nice toy. But consider for what genre of music you want to use it for. I both own Electribes EMX and ESX. They are great machines, for what they can do and sound like. Same goes for Electron stuff.
It is hardware and so it has it's limitations... You cannot produce fully proffesional trance track with it. Because of many techniques you don't have acces to.
By the way... KORG is going to release a new Electribe in 2010, with kaosspad in it. And whatelse will it be doing more...

I don't think that's true. If you had decent outboard gear and a synth or two I'm sure you can make a pro sounding track. It's a very powerful machine.
Where did you hear about this new Electribe? I thought Korg was gonna ditch the groovebox thing.
An electribe with drum synthesis like the machinedrum would be a dream. (Yeah I know bout the ER-1 but it's not even close to as good)

I think its a mistake to believe that professional music always sounds better than a hobbyist or amateur´s
Its not always true. Maybe sometimes sound quality is better, but sometimes music is about much more than sound quality, and maybe a little dirt sometimes can be very appealing.... there dont have to be a contradiction. its the amount of time spent on different parts of the music, and also included the creative input. emotion and feeling
