2 Upavas: any employer will want you to work for free. Any one. And any employee will want to be paid $7 million a year for playing Tetris all day long. Those who say otherwise are lying either to you or (more often) to themselves. Its only through communication between the buyer and the seller that an agreeable wage is determined. If everybody boneheadedly insisted on only what they want, wed all be sitting idle complaining about evil selfish employers and employees.

The age old sentence "DO IT FOR THE SCENE" can hardly be called communication. While I agree with you that we are living in a capitalist world, it still does not make it right.
Sure, communication is needed, but "DO IT FOR THE SCENE" to me is not communication, it is an insult! And on that one I fully agree with Aaron!           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

"Do it for The Scene" is no different from "do it for the family" or "do it for the neighborhood" or "do it for the Motherland" or any other variants of "the greater good". It can be a way to emotionally blackmail you into giving something away. Or it could be a genuine attempt to improve The Scene (or any of those other communal things).

I once was wandering through Detroit's annual fair and found myself at a free concert by Alice Cooper. It was awesome. And Mr. Cooper just did it to be nice to his fellow Detroiters. I am sure he was asked to “do it for Detroit” or something like that too. Could’ve extended his middle finger, Ocelot style. But he didn’t. Anyway, if Lizzard volunteers his own time and effort into putting together an event “for the scene”, I don’t see anything immoral in his suggestion that somebody else volunteers his. Even if “the scene” is just a local bunch of weekend trancers. And I don’t see anything wrong with that artist demanding a payment either. Nobody is wrong here - it’s all up to how effectively the two deliver their thoughts to each other.

Heard BrainLizzard spin once... good dj... nice and heavy. Last track was Ocelot - Tribedelica, which turned out to be one of the most memorable moments on the dancefloor. Wouldn't have sounded quite as good without the hours of brain assault before that but the whole mood reminded me of the Goa Gil vibe till he dropped that track.

This post is awesome. Genuinely poignant.

"Do it for the scene" is the usual bullshit attitude that has existed especially but not exclusively in the USA for far too long. The greater good all too often means the greater purse of the promoter. Many times in the USA, it was always "sorry but no money, can you do it for the scene?" Why always "do it for the scene"?

Here's a parade example. I once had one of the top organizers of Burning Man in my house together with some mates who were planning for the burning man Hawaii deal and was approached by all of them to play a set there. Before the talk was all about the fact that tickets to go there cost more than 200 bucks and how much money will be raised and so on and so forth. So my reply was yeah, I'd love to play, how much do you pay? To which she looked at me, shocked that I could be audacious enough to ask such a question, her reply was the usual "sorry, we cannot pay artists". To which I asked her "surly you can pay artists for their performance if you have 10.000ds (yes, really that many) of people showing up and each of them shelling out more then 200 bucks." Her lame reply was exactly this: "Can you do it for the scene?"

Fuck that !!!
As far as that scene is concerned, I think it really is a scene, on her part... and her purse. Since then I boycott Burning Man.

Whenever I put on events in Hawai'i, I made sure that everyone performing sets was given some compensation, it was not much because I could not afford much, but it always was something, and it felt good to give in return!!!

There should be no question about some compensation, it does not have to be much, but it should be something and it does feel good, to all people involved! And feeling good is what the scene really needs, lets not forget, I am also a part of "the scene"...

Ocelot man, you need to stop screaming for attention from the rooftop every lunar cycle.

First it was 'stop calling psy dark', then your rant about the overall quality of the music/scene..now your datamining Lizzard's posts...Wonder why the mods don't really delete your account ? Your posts are stupid.

me too. i am sorry for your recent loss dear ocelot...recent loss in the family, no girl and stress from the community must be very hard for your soul and i can understand you are depressed and need a break for the psyche. i hope you will soon find more infinite wisdom and divinity in your heart after growing out of the current crisis...
please dont leave isratrance and dont delete your account so that you can come later shining on the light that you are destined to shine:).
you just need a break to rethink life and the universe.
with love:)

p.s. post unrelated to the current episode of the isratrance soap opera:). let each of us shine on:).

p.p.s. i know at least 10 people that would definitely fit perfectly in the description of the first post, but at the end of the day it is not their fault, but of those who follow their ways and actions. stop following , cut the energy you are sending to those who you dont like and give it to those who you like, and and you have done a great thing for your soul and for the purpose of your life.

Did any kind of discussion follow or was it just your middle finger outstretched amid awkward silence?
Did you come back with something like “I’ll gladly do it for the scene – and the $500 you’ll pay me, thank you very much”? To which she whipped up her budget estimates and showed you that she’d go bust. To which you said that you’d do it for $200. To which she agreed. Is that how it went? Or was it the grand magic of middle fingers all around – and then you lost a gig and they lost your set?

sooo yea, time for vomit to be placed on this stupid thread...

Ocelot: Before you start calling people names and saying shit about others ego's, think back to a land called ATLANTA..where my family and friends brought you (including me). Remember when you disrespected our venue as soon as you arrived? What about refusing to leave the room my wife was using to pump breast milk so she could enjoy her time also? Where's YOUR respect for others Sacred space, and PERSONAL space? What about when you insisted we recorded your set, then MADE US ALL wait until you took out all of the unreleased music (about 1 hour longer than we ALL wanted to stay there) when we could of just deleted the set? I mean it wasn't like the mixing was that great any way. Not trying to blast you here man, but you have a lot of nerve calling other people names when in fact you are a complete self centered individual..maybe times have changed, it was a few years ago that this happened...but if you noticed, we haven't invited you back. I'm not going to speak for the entire crew, because that's not what i'm representing. I'm representing myself and MY experience with your energy. You disrespected our space IMMEDIATELY upon entering it. Class act.

There's this festival called Worldbridge, that is a "Do it for the scene" party where amazing artists fly themselves to this side, play for free, eat their own food, and DO NOT EXPECT ANYTHING in return, other than taking away an amazing experience. You must of spoken with somebody that refused, and that's TOTALLY cool...there's LOTS OF BRO BRO artists who come every year...is it absurd to think there's a party like this? Get over it man...IF lizzard got to you, then you let him win. He gets to me some times and i'm one of his best friends..I love him dearly but he can be a bit harsh with his words...it only makes YOU look like an asshat to come on here and put yourself on General Hospital like this. I was going to hold my tongue and not say anything regarding my experience WITH YOU..but since you opened the can of worms...here's mine.

best of luck to you in the future with whatever it is you do.            WARNING: The Reality Master General has determined that Mr. Vomit may significantly alter your reality. Usage of the knowledge provided by Mr. Vomit may be perceived as dangerous and subversive by those in authority.

No need. It will die by itself very soon - the way every "Ocelot thread" has done before. And then we'll see another round - either during the next full moon or when booking for the next big festival starts or when his new album is about to be released.

I deduced a basic generic script for an "Ocelot thread" but won't bother you with it here. Will just tell you that this one is pretty close to the standard.

Cheers.
