Bassline ! , the main beat dictator in our music\tracks, it fills our track with low frequencies and creates harmony in our melodies...

But the question is the sound itself...
IMO bassline should be simply bassline,
From the synth - directly to the mix.

so, do u proccess FX on your bassline ?

most people argue not to put delay on the bassline... it all matters on how u program it if u program 1/8 and u put a delay u can make it 1/16.

u definatly need some compression and eq on it.. its a matter of taste.. just expriment.. u want to cut the freq and make it sit in ur track just good. so it doesnt intefere with ur kick.

reverb makes it more "Big" in sound.

if you delay a bassline, you risk having it go out of sync, overtone and generally clatter your sound-work. eq and compression and the occasional reverb, even chorus or flanger on a bassline is great, but i find it very distasteful to put delay on a bassline. it also makes your writing extremly more difficult.

I tend to agree with what's said here, but if you have some higher frequencies in your bass sound you can use a delay and define the specific frequencies that should be delayed (in Ohmboyz delay, for instance).
Good example for this is in Cosma's sleep of peace. Delaying the bass could really add a lot of space and volume to the track.

There's a few exceptions to each rule - a delay CAN be flanged (Segment - Individual Ants), can be moved through any effects - but...

you need to make sure a few things happen. The bassline needs to sound clear - too much reverb or delays (and there are many ones which will give you an option to put the delay on certain frequencies, Ultrafunk Delay being an easy to use one) will make it sound like a bass humming in the background instead of an actual bassline. You can solve a bit of this by using a gate.

The major problems are these - the sub/bass frequencies should be in mono, so that rules out putting a stereo effect on those frequencies. But with the rest, you can do whatever you want. If you're willing to do some very intensive filtering on the bassline, you'll need to use a multiband compressor (the Waves C4 is a good example, but there are many other options which are VSTs, not DirectX plugins), just to keep the sub at a constant level and give the entire line a more uniform feeling (after all, it IS a bassline).

Of course - the main problem with using too many effects is that you can feel the loss of the richness in the bass very easily in many cases. Digital effect work still might end up giving you too flat a sound, so tread with care.

In short, if it sounds good on your monitors, then you can make it sound good in a track. Unfortunately, it's not always easy to make something sound good, let alone in a track.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

I generally tend to use a little reverb and a little delay on the bassline. It depends what type of bass you use ofcourse.

For instance, a simple off-beat bass can have a longer reverb and a delay of 3/16... which really puts a lot of energy in it. A more varied bass would do nice with 1/8 delay... and a short reverb.
A little chorus is nice as well.

Like Kaz said... if it sounds good... it sounds good.

with enough patience you can layer 2 to 4 bass sounds at different octaves, playing complimentary patterns and with delays also. I find reverbs impossible tho.

But there is something to be said for a simple straight and dry single bass sound!!

YEah.....EQ and compression i all i use on my Bass.
Once u have found your perfect bass sample....or programmed your synth.....the need for any other FX is not really nesseccary.....unless u being real fancy and pulling special FX!
