WE'VE GOT WINNERS!
Mon, March 08, 2010
It took a while to figure out the winners for our Eat Static remix contest, but everything is now settled. As always, we've asked the original band to comment on their favourite remixes and pick the winner. Since we had two tracks in this contest, we've asked Eat Static's Merv Pepler to provide us with his personal top-5 for each remix track. This is what he came up with

"Hi folks! Many thanks for all your weird and wonderful creations! Its always interesting to hear what other people would do with your own sounds and so I sat there waiting in anticipation.

"Now, how I do I judge a remix? A remix for me, and how I still approach them today, should be able to tell a story in its own right, as well as capturing the sound of the band that you are remixing. It should also have your character in it, a part of your own soul - but it should still stay cohesive!

"I started with 'Sin Quest,' and I must say, I was a bit disappointed initially - as a lot of them sounded like jumbled up versions of my own original. Indeed, someone even put my own version in for judging! (hoping I

wouldnt spot it??). He has since come forward and pointed out that he had sent the wrong one! (made us all chuckle though!).

"As I went on through the list, my spirits were lifted and the quality went up, and then I got to the Up Periscope mixes and the general standard of quality and imagination were a lot better for this tune. And there were only half the amount than the Sin Quest one! So, because of this, I am slightly altering the initial rules that those good folks at Laptoprockers told me, and I am giving you the six best Periscope mixes and the best four remixes of Sin Quest. To be honest, it was really difficult getting the Periscope tunes down to five as - like I said, the standard was a lot higher."

Merv's Sin Quest top-4 is as follows:
1. Cortex Remix (008)

"A twisty, windy tough dancefloor version. If you were gonna go for a trance remix, it had to be a good one - this fits the bill!"
2. Nebula Meltdown (038)
"Really like the way my samples have been used in this one, cut up and gated and re-sequenced. And it has a good driving energy to it."
3. Sporophore (028)
"This reminded me of all the draughty tents at free parties in the 90s, in fields in the English countryside, dancing to stay warm!"
4. Aya Remix (042)
"Nice production and a nice cheesy rave aspect to it!"

Mr Pepler's comments on his favourite Up Periscope remixes are on the next page.

1. Aya in Dub (041)
"Really glad a reggae version came in! Great summery vibe to this. Nice blending of the original samples and the whole track builds nicely - perfect."
2. Jimi remix (017)
"Loved this one too, a close second runner up indeed. Good pounding drumbeat, turned a nice chill out tune into a car chase scene from a movie. So glad we had some people brave enough to try different tempos. Almost has a 60s vibe."
3. Magnaray (013)
"Had to give this one a mention as it wouldve won if we were having a 'Who can do the weirdest mix' competition. A tune sounding like you are trying to wade through toffee, or being lost underwater. Also loved the fact that hardly any samples were used, and to use the vocal more as a main feature. Genius! (or madman?)"
4. Squarefeet remix (030)
"A nicely mashed up version. Good use of chopped original samples. I actually know Pepe in person and this style is what he does best."
5. Descarga Electrica remix (032)
"I picked this one as it's clever in the way it really captures the vibe of the original, but altering the whole feel. I

really like the gentleness of it - a real easy laid back stoners version!"
6. Alex Lavendar remix (037)
"This one was interesting, an eyebrow raising tune that had a very filmesque vibe - like a version made for a late night sad euro cinema experience! It also reminded me of the early Warp records sound. Industrial. Berlinesque."

"I wanted to also mention the Scum Unit remix, for one of the best names in the competition! The other mention is the Shiwa2000 remix. This would have made my list if it had been in on time!"

"So there you go, all my favourites. Some made me laugh, some made me cry. Others just made me shake my head in dis-belief. But hey, thats the beauty of music and why we all love it so much. A big thanks to all of you who put any time and effort into doing these. Till the next time and place!"

Established by Merv's judging both Cortex and Aya win the first prize - LinPlug's all in one drum solution plugin RMV. But who's the overall winner for inclusion on an upcoming Eat Static release? We've got some great news

on that issue further down, but not before we've mentioned the outcome of the voting for second prizes and both winners of the third prizes.

Three top voted remixes got the same number of votes: Cortex' Sin Quest remix (007), Shiwa 2000's version of Up Periscope (054), and Squaremeat's remix of Sin Quest (029). As Cortex already is a first prize winner, the second prizes go to Shiwa 2000 and Squaremeat. Each of them win CronoX, LinPlug's sample mangling engine.

Here's at Laptoprockers we had the opportunity to listen to all the remixes that came in before we sent out the lot for judging, and picked our favourites quite a while before Merv sent us his picks. Yet, the two winners of LinPlug's top-notch FM Synth Octopus, turned out to be among his favourites too. Third prize winners are Sporophore for his old school mix of Sin Quest (028) and Alex Lavendar for his remix of Up Periscope (037). Other remixes we like to mention here are the Sin Quest remixes by AuraSounD (049) and Naua (025), as well as Zenmodulator's (47) Up Periscope remix. Each of these three mixes has a vibe that sets them apart from the others.

Now who will get the release? The winning remix overall turned out to be the Aya in Dub Periscope remix (041), but is was a photo finish! In Merv's opinion there's nothing between that one and Cortex' version of Sin Quest (007) so he put it to a vote with a bunch of his friends - and the Aya mix just crept in, so that's the lucky one! But that's not all! Merv told us he might release more remixes from the contest on a special Eat Static anniversary release later this year, and he picked a total of eight remixes

from his selection of top tracks. If you're selected for this you'll be asked to supply a wav version of your track for consideration. Don't contact us, we'll get back to you and contact all the winners personally this week. Congratulations!

THANK YOU!

Thanks everyone for your great remixes. This contest wouldn't have been possible without the LinPlug team, who created these wonderful plug-in prizes! Thanks for that. And, of course, our gratitude goes out to Merv Pepler!

It was great fun and we hope to see you remixers around in a future contest

If you have any feedback please post your comments on the contest page (see link below) or feel free to promote your remix and the contest results at Facebook or Myspace.
