Hey guys,

Been thinking about this a bit and it seems to me a staple of Simon's sound are these, for lack of a better term, "snakecharmer" type sounds. It's like a sustained note that is sliding around to these exotic eastern sounds. I've been playing with pitch bending and stuff but I don't get how he hit's certain notes and stuff if it's just pitch bending. Any tips on how to get that type of sound? Maybe gliding midi notes? I'm not sure, I've gotten semi-close but not where I want to be with it.

An example is in the beginning of this song at like 16 seconds in.

Thanks all! <3

I dont know,that stuff sound's pretty tricky.But i doubt that i can be so easily re-made.
First because i heard Shpongle had enormous amount of Sample CD's,and second because Raja Ram is known for playing for around 20 instrument's if not more,so..that gives you the picture

It's something to do with the harmony he's setting up. I'm interested in knowing more about this harmony too and how to get close.

It's the entire timbre. Doesn't seem to have to do with a a specific instrument or sample at all.

Well of course it has to do with the scale played but I'm guessing also the synth's timbre has a certain exotic quality to it. Like a sitar for example even a single tone would sound pretty weird compared to a normal guitar string... maybe some strange microntonal shit idk xD

Try modulating pitch with step modulation (use glide) then manually play with amount, bringing it in and out. Add another step lfo modulating filter cutoff but add a small delay/offset/attack to the lfo.

Notes in your sequence should be carefully chosen.
Even with all that it is hard to get the same sound.

you can do that with this thing: http://www.akaipro.com/ewi4000s

saw this band BeshodroM play at the vancouver folk festival this summer, their lead player played that thing. AMAZING shows. he made that thing play drumNbass, he made it sound like a DJ scratching, all kinds of stuff. you can see a video of the guy playing the thing on his my space: http://www.myspace.com/245160957. disk scratching at like 3:50.

go to the very bottom of the page and watch the video there... its amazing!

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I think everybody is onto some aspect of how to do this but I still haven't encountered something that is really clicking with me. The most convincing method for me so far has been simply playing a harmony which is similar to that eastern vibe then using glide.

But I also hear him doing this to samples so he could be sampling stuff and doing it in the sampler as well. I'll keep playing with it.

That MIDI flute looks sweet though I don't have the cash to drop on something like that to test it out. I'm sure it could achieve at least something close to what we're talking about though. Wish I could try it.

If anybody else has any other ideas feel free to post them!

i think the sound has a good amount of reso, and maybe is a saw wave and a square wave together or something like dat, simon also plays with the lfo and cut off in some pieces of the melody, of course also the scale is important!

Since I first posted this I've come to the conclusion that he pretty much just plays it in. It's probably, as has been said, some kind of resonant fairly basic sound with some glide maybe but the real magic happens from the scale and the way he plays it. Guess I need to practice playing it in more! Here's a good example.
