Though no amateur sequencer, Ableton Live shines in useability. Check the built-in lessons for a lowdown on Live basics.

your future in music making will thank you:
logic or cubase
(learn 'harder' once with a full blown sequencer rather than learn twice or more times)
best wishes

Fruti loops is definetelly the most intuitive....but its a totally diferent way to make things...so its a bit like dtd says, it will be easier to learn the basics but once you want to change you´ll have to learn most things from scratch.... |

try this one. I don't say it's better than anything... it's what you make out of it :-)
http://www.xt-hq.com/ (demo available)
advantages:
-low $$$
-easy on the eyes
-modular, or is it semi modular? :-)
-works as a vst inside your favourite host
(xt in xt anyone?)
-nice arpeggio as a module
-preset morpher/randomizer
-more midi plugs you can twist your head around
oh yeah - I love it
there are some negative points tho:
there will be a version 2. I don't know when, but probably soon
other negative point is that it's got a learning curve. you have to find your own way of using it. There's alot of documentation and user tips around, so don't let that hold you back.

although i use Logic and although it has a so many features, we all know that using cubase or logic we explore not more than 20%-30% of their magnificent posibilities.
Live is something new and revolutionary also but I think the simplest and yet full of all the nesecary features, sequencer is
TRACTION 2 from Mackie. I didnt tryed it yet but I'm reading just superb comments about it. It was designed exactly with this in mind. Uniting the most important features in a sequencer and get rid of all this tones of thingies we never use...
here is a link, and good reviews. this sequencer has everything, send effects, bus, aux, automation, vst support, audio support, timestreching.. hmm what more could u need

I wondered why people wouldn't mention it...Really, Traction saved my life (and time)
I use it from the first day i got it until today, It really helped me, and together with reason they make an adorable, sweet and helpful couple. Sure it may lack many pro features, but if you're in it for your hobby, just want to lay down these ideas and start making music in the less possible hassle you could get, then go for it and look no other way.

I don't think that's really true if you actually learn to use FL deeply. FL was my first journey into making music on the computer and I used and learned with it for 2 or 3 years before finally jumping to Cubase. When I did make the jump, I was able to start making music at the same level I was on Fruity almost instantly. This is true of synths or anything, but if you really study something deeply you'll find that probably 90% of what you learn can be used just about every where else too. Of course if you only use FL for like 3 months and then try and switch your mileage may vary greatly.

FL is the most intuitive I find, although Ableton live comes very close.
