This technique is good for adding a 3-d look to a picture. This technique can add the little bit of texture that can spice up an already good image, make it pop out a little more.

The main point of this teknique is that it lets you get the 3d highlighting of the emboss filter without sacrificing the color scheme of your original image.

Step 1: Flatten your image (or get all the parts you want in 3d merged into one layer).
Step 2: Duplicate the layer.
Step 3*: Apply the emboss filter. You will have to play with the settings to make it look good with the particulars of your image. Usually the height is best kept to under 10 pixels (to prevent the top image from being offset to much), and the amount set high (200% and above)(so that you get enough of the details embossed).
Step 4 (optional): Reduce the saturation on the embossed layer so that its pretty much in greyscale., but the details aren’t lost.
Step 5: Play with the layers pop-up menu so that the 3d until you get the blend you want. I find that the darken and overlay blends generally work best. Inverting the colors on the embossed layer can also help.

Voila! You have now achieved the 3-dness that emboss gives you, and preserved the color scheme of your original image.

*Note: steps 3 and 5 can be reversed, and it might be better to do so once you know what layer blend you will be using. That way you will be able to adjust the emboss more precisely to the specific situation because you will be able to see what it looks like with the layer blend on.

Another way to do something similar:
Take the image you want to 3-D-ify, important into a program (such as Bryce or John Knolls Cybermesh plugin) that can covert bitmap images into 3-d terrain models (by making the darker areas lower and the lighter areas higher). The mesh resolution ought to be as high as your computer can handle for this.
Move the camera so that it is facing straight down on the terrain made from the bitmap, and there is a little blank space on all sides. Make sure the model is adjusted so that on the x and y plane it is the exact same ratio as the original image. Make the texture a plain color (medium brightness grey works best) and set all the reflection/specularity etc settings to 0.
Then render the image, so you have a top-down view of the 3-d map of the image you want to make 3d.
Then open the original in Photoshop and paste in the newly rendered image, so that it is in another layer.
If you did the 3d rendering part correctly it should overlay the original image almost exactly. Scale and move it so that it overlays as exactly as possible. (set the transparancey to 50% on the 3d rendering layer to help align it properly, then take it back to 100%)
Then play with the layer blends so that the 3-dness of the top layer and the colors of your original image are balanced in a way that is pleasing to you.

Hope somone finds this useful!
