Hey there isracrew!
I'm trying to create something like this lead in the Dynamo song Here They Come. You can listen to a sample here:
http://members.shaw.ca/high-priest/dyamo_lead.mp3
What I need is advice on how to get that 'aww-aww-aww' sound before the lead kicks it into full gear.
Once the filter comes off, the resulting sound is easy enough to recreate with saws in z3ta/vanguard, but what I think I'm looking for is a particular filter envelope.
What's the trick here?

u are looking for a formant filter.
Indeed saws are the best source oscilator for fromant sounds, but you need a formant filter for the vocalish fx.
There are anumber of ways you could do this. Easiest would be to use a synth with a formant filter like the discoDSP for example. The Disco formant filter is not perfect because it only has one formant setting. To create your own formant filter send your lead to an eq, and create 3-5 narrow resonant peaks (you could do this by ear or you could research what frequencies are atenuated for each particular vowel sound). Then create a wider resonant peak, and use automation to sweep it across as you play your lead.
Another fast and "cheap" way to get fromant sounds is using a bitcrusher on a nice saw lead, and sweeping your lead's cutoff.
Best is to go the discodsp way or create your own, then bitcrush it
I haven't heard your dynamo example btw, I don't have speakers on this pc, so excuse me if I'm waaaaay of on what you are asking, but from your description it seems like this is what you want,

Question:
What is the bitcrush effect? What does it do to the audio?
Dressed to kill you look so right... I am drunk with lust tonite. |

2 Cyanescens: i think it should be saw with bp12 filter, try to make it in albino or zeta.
and then some eq plus delay
and you will get it=)
have fun.
