Here's some potentially interesting reading:
http://www.cdmasteringservices.com/dynamicrange.htm

Obviously this applies to the psytrance world in a slightly different way... though the quest for loudness is rather intense these days. I don't have the classically trained ear, but as a DJ I notice huge differences between CDs from some different labels when I go to mix around. Is compression being taken too far? What's a good example of dynamic range on a recent psytrance release?

That guy does seem a bit fanatical about his views - It would be interesting to see how other professionals would respond.

I think the whole MP3 and sales issue he talks about clutters up his point.

But, interesting read. Perhaps a .wav from him with some examples would have been a good idea for those of us who like to know what we are talking about

I dont know if it also applies in the Psy World (bad dynamics) - I think Psy CDs now sound A LOT better than they did 10 years ago.

Best Wishes

very interesting.
in psy trance you can hear a lot of examples of producers who "burns" thier sound just to reach greater hights.

I think all of the tracks being released since 20023 are dynamicly killed and pushed up to 00db.
When I work I try to do that as well, just thought that the higher is better. Mostly only my kick comes up to 00db, the rest is -6db and its area.

What do you mean by that? Burn their sound?

I dont think that producers should abuse of compression, at least in ratios...

if you compress a sound today with a 5:1 ratio and later the master engineer applys a another 5:1 in the wole mix, that sound in the end will have 25:1 because the compression ratios are multiplicative!!!

Ok, it depends the insrument you are using but keep in mind that high compression ratios sound psychoacoustically smaller than low compression ratios!!!

killing the dynamic range has been pretty popular in most kinds of music lately. even some old albums being remastered to fit todays needs. most of the oldskool dont enjoy this trend, although i dont think it is something that bad, unless the piece is classical music or something to that effect.

An example of an album with agreat use of dynamic range is King Crimson's "In the court of the crimson king". I don't know if it's so much of an issue with trance though, since it's music designed to be loud and at a more or less steady volume at all times.           Row row row your boats gently down the stream; merrily merrily merrily merrily life is but a dream.
