Do you automate EQ's and compressor's parameters when mixing your tracks? Or adjust the setting once, to make the sounds fit each other when they are playing together?
For example, you have two leads in similar freq range, when they are playing at the same time, they must be tweaked to sound good together, but when they are playing separately, they can be EQ'd more gently, to keep the color and fatness.

I just let the lead thats more important duck the other one in such cases

Dynamic mixing ("dynamix" hehe), which involves EQ, compression, leveling etc - a tiresome but very effective way to maintain full color to your mix throughout the whole track.
If a lead part sits very well in the mix with all the other instruments accompanying it, but once you have a solo lead playing it sounds thin and unsatisfying, and it's pretty obvious to happen - you should prepare another EQ or chain of processors to fit the situation. Just switch between the settings instead of automating.
This is only an example, and I know of at least 2 pros who do this, and it won't surprise me that many engineers are doing the same.
You need to have alot of patience for this

that was a fuckn awesome question and i've found myself asking the same question in the back of my head when mixing, i try to avoid it and leave it where its at for the whole song but in some parts i'll automate it and then bring it back, is this the correct way or should i ride that shit to the end??? or just leave it there dammit lol |

i have EQ automations in all my tracks in order to reveal/separate/clear sounds using the same frequency range...
sometimes i use ducking on EQ db values slaved to a more 'master' lead/sound...
on compressors, no. i have tried some times, but i don't see this helping me at this point maybe sometime in the future i come up with a technique specific sounds with comp automation

The only thing I never tend to automate is compressor settings, because the results aren't as predictable as if you leave the controls alone - especially if you have other automation on the same channel! Having said that I can imagine some specific situations where that would be useful, if tricky. I think once you automate a compressor, everything before it in the FX chain would need to be considered as complete and finished, unless you're some kind of double-brained genius.
Everything else is fair game.
