Try a synth patch playing a minor chord maybe ?
Try one with no attack, some decay and short release on the osc envelope settings and play short notes. Maybe add a wha effect, reverb and a nice dub delay to it for better results.
Post a clip of an example please, so we can know exactly what you mean.
Cheers!            Peace, Love, Death metal

haha, "qwank"...i like that word.

for roots stuff its almost always a guitar or keyboard. for some roots dub ive heard songs where they actually use the hihat instead almost exactly like in psytrance. Most the time though thats where the chord progression is coming from though.

For synths just mess around with a patch with a percussive attack.

if your around 70bpm, have the qwank and a cool bassline going its pretty much an open book what you do after that.

It's all about rythm? huh? It's always in between 2 beats! (well, if there would be any beats in them) I think he's looking for the actual making of the sound. Problem is you can't point it out so easy because you can't say (like in psytrance) it's a saw wave with lfo on the blahblah...

Anyway, it's hard to produce on a computer using vsti that's for sure... In a real dub/reggae band it's usually a plucked guitarsound with wah on it or sometimes a keyboard (but wouldn't know which or what settings). On vsti you can manage with stringstudio and lots of (post)modulation I guess.           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

The technical term for it is, "skank."
And 9/10 times it's a guitar playing a minor or major chord. You mute the strings so that they basically don't resonate at all. Just this quick skank sound. Also, they will often throw in a piano hitting the same chord at the same time just for effect, though it's usually buried pretty far in the mix.

spring rerverb or tape delay on snare?

ROLAND SPACE ECHO to be precise!!

you can get some spring reverb impulse responses for convolution reverbs pretty much all vst "spring reverbs etc" are useless

Palm muted chord on a guitar.

I have like one sample like that, here you go:

Anyone know of any place for bunches of dub/dubstep type samples?

Yeah, a skank, muted strings on a guitar, usually on the upbeat (so strummed up instead of down). Chord on a piano with some phaser sounds good too (a la Ott).
