Does anyone know how to take the most advantage for audio production from your computer if it has 2 processors?
...in the same matherboard...
thanks! |

Hi
The most important fact is that your audiosoftware SUPPORTS two processors... so before all you will have to check this.
Then... the new Intel PIV processors have the "HT - Hyperthreading" technology...
In as understandable and short words possible:
Intel discovered that their processors are never being used at the max of their performance because they "had been managed badly".. so they invented HT. The processor behaves for your windows like TWO processors.. but it's only physicaly one, all that is double is "the managing part" of the processor.. so it can use all of it's power...
This was really unprofessional expressed, so the super smarts among you, can, if you want, explain it correctly... but all I wanted to do is to get the sense here to make it understandable for everybody..
Furthermore.. with intel you will need XEON proc to have REALLY two CPUs.. the HT aren't avaiable for dualboards... but those XEON boards are too expensive, and most of them are not up to the 800MHz FSB...
The Atlons maybe are a good choice... but also the price there... (for two).. and the heat.. and the fans and the noise (if you care about that)
Hm is it good or not? I've read a lot about it.. and what I can say is that it's certainly not double the power that you will get.. it's maybe 50% more then with one... (the rest will be nedded to coordinate the two CPUs.)
And you need winXP professional or 2000
A lot of people do not recommend it.. but.. why do the macintoshes use douple CPUS for their hardcore machines?
So you see, it's not that easy..
Me for my part, find it to expensive... I have a PIV 3.06GHz with HT... it's quite ok.. I can still overload it.. but it's good working...
But after all it's all the same.. you have the faster CPU you use more plugins... and you will go to the limit earlier or later anyway....
I would recommend to go for a motherboard that offers the newest technology... at the moment a FSB of 800MHz, Dual DDR (PC3200 or more) and of course HT support... then you get a cheap pIV maybe a 2.4GHz or something lower that is cheap and still acceptable..
wait till the 3.2GHZ pIV with 1MB cache and 800FSB are down to an acceptable price and buy it...
All the best

how you do it mike?
when i am mastering my track i hit something like 75-80.
maybe you use very "difficult" plugs.
try using less overloading plugins.
also me making techno - most of the channels are percussion so maybe because of that i am using 30-40 percent |

Does Cubase or Reason support dual cpu ussage?
Or, how could I verify this? |

Cubase does.. reason I don't know... you will find out for sure if you check the website, or send them an email...
But!
If you use two different programs at the same time.. for example cubase and reason, then they will be handled each one on an own processor anyway...
so the advantage is yours...
But if reason doesn't support two processors, and overloads its dedicated processor, wheras the processor running cubase has free performance, then you will not be able to use your full power...
