Hi everybody,
I was thinking about the big amount of memory the vsti/vst s takes from the computers resources, and the CPU loads and I was reading that those DSP cards are great to calculate
the VST/VSTis algorithms separately of the CPU!

I found in an article at
http://www.sweetwater.com/feature/daw/daw_defined.php

That Many DSP accelerators are dedicated to running a particular company's plug-ins and Other accelerators, such as Digidesign's Accel cards can run any plug-ins that conform to the card's and the DAW software's formats and specifications..

Anybody use them ?
What do you think about those cards ?
Is there is Soundcard using DSP tech ?
peace.

I use Creamware scope and love it.

The depth of the kick and bass sounds acheivable beats any VSTi's I tried.
The sonic timeworks compressorX, EQ and reverb sound great, and there is for sure a big difference compared to their DX counterparts.
Also there is a noticable difference when I mix down on the scope mixer instead of doing all the mixing in the sequencer.

I think there is a couple of reasons why you get higher quality sounds with a DSP card.
It has enough power to do the calculations with high bitdepth and frequency. When developing native plugins the developer have to be more conservative with CPU usage.

Also, you don't find the scope or TC plugins cracked as far as I know.
There was some for an old version of scope, but they where very dodgy and did not work with the next update.
That means that developer dare to rease full quality algorithms.
I know that TC have been admitting that their VST plugs is basically reduced quality versions of the algorithms they use in thier hardware and powercore.
They just aren't so keen on letting out the algorithms for their reverb units for $1000's in a format that will be widespread in P2P networks even if PC's today would have enough power to run them.

I use a Powercore and a Universal Audio UAD-1 card and they have completely changed my workflow because i have more processing power left for other stuff. Plus, they sound better then most native plugins. These DSP cards are definitely worth the cash.

I wanted to know if you could run Creamware cards just for DSP instrument's...for i do- NOT want to use it as a sound card or virtual mixer etc..since i have a nice sound card already. The other thing is do they run well along other DSP ware, for i also have a powercore.
thanks any help much apprecaited !

fugga: they have no problem whatsoever running with other dsp-cards/boxes. And they have no problems working alongside soundcards either

@fugga
If you don't like the idea of having one more separate environment in your box, scope might not be for you.
There is an XTC mode, which makes it possible to load the fx and instruments in your VST slots directly in your sequencer, but it doesn't work so well it seems and should be avoided.

So I would count on haing to submix on the pulsar.
Personally I would hate not to be able to since the sound seems to get much more defined when doing that.

I know people running several different DSP cards without problem. There can be issues with PCI load if you have a bad mobo or incorrect configuration, but usually it should be just fine.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

thanks for the input guys! it has been a little confusing checking out the scope gear...there site is not that good and it is hard to find people who are in similar positions as myself.

At the moment i am running a TC powercore and a RME fireface.....and for a while there i left my old Echo Mia soundcard in my pc just so i could A/B it if i wanted to... BUT quite often some how there would Asio conflicts... not sure why ... i think it was due to loading old tracks up wich used the old setup. So in the end i had to remove the Echo Mia to solve th conflicts, and that is why i am a bit sketched out about investing in creamware.... especially when i have heard so many bad things about there support.

any how thanks again... and please keep your opions comming!

Hi fugga,

You will not be able to use any creamware card along with your fireface or any other soundcard.
Creamwares like to be the only soundcard in the system. A friend of mine who bought one gust to use the dsp, along with a fireface by the way, found out the hard way.

That's a petty. I have 2 uads and 2 pocos and i'd buy a creamware for it's vsti's but the only way i can do that is by using a second pc...and i'm working on that right now.

I will configure the second pc only for samplers and the scope and use the fx teleport to work it all in the main pc.

Hope i've helped

oh, and now that i've read the thread on fx teleport....i'm concerned although according to the research i've made things have changed with the fx teleport...to better.
But let me dig into it a bit more and i'll get back with more info.

also, if someone knows please reconfirm the statement about the creamware not working together with other soundcards. I'll be back with more on that too.

Cheers

sorry, that was too selfish of me.....your question was about dsp accelerator cards.

The uads are great, amazing, absolutely magnicent for compressors, limiters and reverbs. I don't know of any other native plug-in of the like that sounds better than the ones uad has.

Pocos are particularly great for choruses, delays as well as all others that, again, sound better than all other natives i know++++the virus soft synth is no less than a monster.
