Hi guys,
how do i make my drums work well and stand out in the mix and sharp attacks and groove in fullon like the closed high hats in coherent with the open hats in coherent with the clap or snare...i want to make it groovy and with the bassline...sometimes it sounds like my bassline grooves one way and my drums are their own track lol
please someone with any advice to point me in the right direction...i know i should group them all into one track so i can process them together...but my question is what plugins shoudl i start with for this "gelling together" for the drums...
any advice welcome
thanks guys |

good samples , good levels and careful EQing to fit them in the mix
sometimes i find that samples of similar groups , like funky ,, or rock for example ,, fits together better and gives the groove u want
also about grouping them , i think it is better to group similar soundz , like hihats , and another for snare , and EQ them separately cause they have different hue and need different treatment, if u EQ a snaredrum with the hihats , it will lose the punch
a bigger group that contains all the percussions can be used for reverb imo (and some EQ - hipass maybe?) , to give the same image and space to them ..

Are you sure it isn't an arrangement issue?

I think also arrangement is a big issue.Closed hats should not be where the open hats hit and so on... Maybe if you post an example we'll be able then to see (hear) better what you mean! I'm studying for some time now how to recreate the drums part (exactly after intro) of Ultravoice - Imagination (simultaneously playing kick, hats, snare and still there is a snare filling which you can hear very clearly),but no luck so far.If someone has a tip, please share! |

you hit it exactly what i meant lantiocho...ultravoice knows what he is talkin about in these things...his high hats and snares sound perfect together...as if its a set of futuristic drum set infront of him playing them with drumsticks....i need to make everything to sound as one HOW!!!???
thanks guys |

hey man ive been working on my percussion lately, particularly hi hats. a few things ive learnt and u might want to try is get a sample playing say anywhere between 25-50% left and another sample playing 25-50% right. now eq the difference in frequencies between the two (using spectral analyzer or your ears ) to get them sounding as one with nice stereo space. give it a try you will be happy with the results.
another thing for my percussion is compression. use attack to get the amount of click i suppose and threshold to control the amount of body .
but all in all careful eqing is definatly the trick here. for me i like to cut alot from 4000hz down say (just advice) and a little from the ultrasonic range so they dont overpower.
good luck man, with time and effort you'll get there. |

saturation plugins can fatten up the drums.. also really spend time on your envelopes to get everything to fit together nicely

Another good trick is to lower your decay and release times to zero and set your sustain all the way up on your drum sampler. Then use different note lengths to make the drums cutoff or have different lengths to make the rhythms sound different. This will make them a lot more snappy and make the rhythms stand out more. Make sure to use varied velocities as well.
Also try and do some panning and visualize a drum set of sorts in front of you while you do it.

-good samples
-good arrangement
-panning
-sensible eqing if needed.
Also try sending drum channels to one group and apply overall compression, maybe eq/saturation, to make the sounds stick and groove together. Be gentle with the attack setting of the comp (not too fast), this wil ruin the drum sound. Set release so it grooves with the rest of the track. |

Argh. Rapidshare sucks. (You have to wait then you need to type in the auth code. It has a daily limit etc. Pain in the arse).
