Wish I could help you about the 'metallic' sound (still working on that one), but I have come across how to get that good 'groove' feel to my hihats - compression!

How I tweak the compressor (I do this to help use a compressor to add a 'groove' to a sound):

I stick on the waves C1 comp, put my threshold to 0, ratio to 8:1, my attack to 0, and my release to max. Then I lower the threshold until I just start to hear the sound get 'squashed'. Then I lower the release until I hear the sound start to 'swing' with the rest of the song. After I have a good groove going, I bring up the attack to help crisp up the hihat. Then I lower the threshold until I start losing the groove feel. Lastly I'll adjust the threshold a little.

All of this I do by ear, listening as I adjust each parameter until it all sounds good (this is why monitors are so important ).

Again, wish I could help you on the metallic sound.

What's the dr008 like? Is it a sampler or does it actually synthesize the drum sounds.

Anyhoo, happy tweaking.

For the 'metalic' sound try a saturation plugin, like the PSP Vintage Warmer, the PSP MixSaturator or Voxengo Warmifier or PolySquasher.            Signature

Metalic sound is usually a short gate reverb.           >>> FOR SALE: Mac-clone OSX86 Audio Workstation <> Perfect computer for Logic 9 Pro <<<

C3P0,

I tried a gate reverb (Waves Rverb) but couldn't get anything close to the metallic sound.

When you say 'short', do you mean close early reflections, no early reflections, or just a fast decay rate? Is there a better plugin that Waves Rverb?

Sorry to pester you, but as much as I tried tweaking the parameters in RVerb I felt like I was doing it blind - not knowing what I was trying to get to.

Thanks!

fuzz mate , u really want to mess around with reverb ...

the best software reverb on the planet ...

" waves ir -1 "

use this one and temme if u had any success ...

in my opinion ir -1 is around 40 % more cleaner and denser than the rverb !

My percussion trick is usually 5 different types of hi-hats, occasional claps & snares.
All sent to one group, compressed, 8khz and above boosted, cut the low freqs. Then a bit of short reverb and a tiny delay.

I'm all over the Waves Ir -1 then!

I will post any luck I have with it, thanks for the suggestion!

Mike - you use 5 different types? Wow, do you have them going all at once?

My drum kits always seem to wind up the same:

kick, 1 hihat, 2 rims, 1 clap, 2 snares, 1 cymbal (with a reverse).

Needless to say it gets boring pretty quick, but I've been focusing on synth programming so much lately that I haven't bothered working on percussion that much.

Yea
Here's the perc kit of my latest track:

The regular open hi hat, another one to throw in once in a while. Reverse closed hi hat, crash, reverse crash (synthesized in attack), regular closed hh, another one pitched strong up, shakers, 2 types of snares, a clap and my special mike-ish cs1x self written drum loop (which adds about 5 more types to the list)

The thing is not putting it all at once in a mess - it's building it carefully to work together. Let's say I got 2 hats, one without much trebles and another one with only that - you can put them together and it will sound great.

I guess the lesson here is that I need to spend some time developing my percussion skills. Nice tip on layer different sounds to go well together (balancing the frequencies)

heh, there's always *something* to learn, isn't there? (guess that's why I love this so much)

Another fun trick that can same time & come up with patterns you would never program:

If you have a hardware synth with good built in arpeggiators, capture a MIDI pattern of one of he arps and move the captured pattern from the synth over to your drum sampler.

This results in not only detailed 16th notes all over the place, but a good variation in VELOCITY of those notes too, which is so tedious to program in but makes a huge difference in rhythm sounds.           http://soundcloud.com/aeon604

Another trick I recently discovered: put some reverb on them with diffusion on 1 (out of a 100) and size on max. (decay on 0.6-2.0 sec for me) this gives your hat a metallic-ish touch that sounds very pure. Make sure you can change the volume of your reverb on the whole, it won't sound good if you put this efx the full 100% on your hh's. And put this reverb before your compressor and in my case, also before another small reverb with diffusion on 100 and size 40.

Hm, maybe for the metallic sound you could also use the Enigma plugin by Waves. It may make your hats sound too shrill, but imho you can add some nice metallic sparkle to them.
