Really good tips so far..Thanx guys for adding to the thread.

Anybody heard of NY Compression, where you compress the hell out of your drum bus and mix it with the original drum signal?

How many of you use a Korg PadKontrol, or Trigger Finger to play your drums out? Why do you use it if you do?

Also I guess how many people play drums on their keyboard, or just play them somehow instead of writing them in the sequencer...?

Why?

NY compression - there should be a lot of reading out there in mastering engineer's handbooks and similar books.

Also called parallel compression and can produce excellent results. Reason users can check out James Bernards new multi-band compression refill.

I use the Alesis ControlPad, but I'm only just starting out with it. I intend to randomly "stick" out individual samples of anything that comes to mind. For now, I have it synced to Reason for Redrum hits and REX slices.....           ELECTRON EYES / MARK-EVAN (NOR. CAL)

Can you tell how and why you prefer Massive for drum parts?

When I open this device in R5 I tend to stare at the GUI for about 5 minutes then give up. I've had much better luck using Aerobic but unfortunately it does not handle any external samples. Maybe I should take another look?

Bummer that the gui quits on you I like it because it's fast, very easy to make rolls, modulate note length etc. Anyhow, Guru can give comparable results.

I don't like using Guru because of the fact that the FX are really no good IMO and You Can't Reverse Samples!
How hard would it be to let people reverse samples, I mean really?

The pattern sequencing is nice, but there is too much that can't be copied part for part to the sequencer.

@Boobytrip

You said you make a bunch of loops then use them to layout the song...How do you make variations and little things like that when you're working with all drum loops you made? Just curious...           ~Airyck~

psylevation : guru is the best drum sampler!

you can easily tweak each sample.... put buit-in fx....there is lots of fx!

the only bad thing is there is no reverse!

its great and easy to use           www.myspace.com/aliasix

I've messed with it, I like alot of aspects of it, but the fx values make no sense to me. I think they all just read out values of 0 - 100. Is there some kind of logic behind this? Because I'm not seeing it if there is...

The pattern stuff is really nice though, I like how automation of certain parameters inside the program leads to alot of interesting patterns and fx type drums...

If anybody wants to explain the theory behind 0 - 100 for every fx parameter feel free           ~Airyck~

hehhe....i dunno if im understanding you properly!

look.....in pad edit section you have direct fx....comp, filter, tube drive, distortion, bit crush...etc!

wich means .....you can add any fx you want on each sample....and automate this!

in aux effects section ....you have 3 master fx channels

example:

1.turn on reverb on aux1 channel

2.choose sample in pad edit that you want to recieve reverb from aux1

3.in pad edit section tweak the aux send1 knob
(this knob is the values that you are talking about?)

its simple mix knob....thats all ....its very simple

its great drum sampler.....im telling you this because
im making different drum/percussions.....patterns

im usualy working on ambient/chill-out/down-tempo

its very good sampler for music that im making!

Well I might just give it another go. What I meant was you'll have things like say the Attack of a compressor, instead of it say 8.5 milliseconds, it just says 10, or 23, or 50, up to 100. I don't think they mean milliseconds. There are alot of controls that don't have proper readouts. This is what I was asking about...

I've always liked it, It just has a few things that kinda turned me off....Like I said though I'll definitely give it another shot.

Drum Samplers has been one thing that I've never really found one that I really like, though Guru was close in alot of aspects.

It depends, most of the time i make several variations before bouncing to audio and use those to maintain some rhythmic interest. For example i make four different bars of hihats and use those singe-bar pieces to build larger patterns (Lego-stylee). Then what i do is i make several audio tracks, each with different panning, reverb, effects, filters etc and cut out small snippets (mostly using quantize to cut according to musical time) from the audio loops and move those to the other audio tracks, maybe reversing the snippets, applying offline effect etc. So the loop remains the same, but it's distributed over several audio-tracks. If i'm satisfied with the result i normally send the tracks through a single group-bus and put them in a folder track for easy working.

Thats a really great idea I like the idea of making a bunch of audio tracks with different fx on them and chopping the loops up and placing them on the different tracks. You could really get some interesting stuff going on there with different parts of the loop having different fx, filters, eqing, etc on them.

Drum loops are apealing because you have a rhthmic sound that when you chop up or edit can sound nothing like what you could create from a synth or a single drum hit and that really seems to open up the possibilites of really intricate drums that evolve and stay interesting.

Thanx for the great tip Boobytrip

So I've been playing with Guru again for a couple days now. I'm really starting to like it now. I had no idea that you could load a sample and have it be transposed to different keys while you played it.

I also learned it's great for loading up a longer sample and doing "scrub" automation to jump around the sample rhythmically.

I think I had a different perspective on drums last time I used it. Now it really seems good (except no reverse). I own DR-008 and FXpansion told me they would give me a good discount on GURU because of some problems I was having with DR-008 and the time that I bought it. I'm going to keep trying it for a while but thanx for turning me back on to it.
