someone told me about a style called "drum & space" that consists of psytrance melodies and such but with DnB beats. Anyone know what he's talking about?

Check this thread Vector_0..

Some Blue Room releases used to be "psychedelic" Drum'n'Bass (like VA Freekstyle)

More recently maybe (I said maybe) VA "Broken" on TimeCode records

Also Surreal Audio records..

Now I dunno if there's such some stuff enough to make it a style..

Is it Ahmed TeeBee's side project?

If you want to hear some proper D'n'B and Psy fusion, look no further:

Funny enough... THis is a concept that I am exploring for one of my album tracks... Instead of the customary chillout track on an artist album I intend on making a drum & bass track with a heavy psychedelic influence. I think that the track will be more like the old skool atmospheric d&b with a strong jazz influence combined with lots of wierd noises and textures... and much bass... I'll keep you posted on the outcome.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

i dunno about that drum and space mark but there is a plenty of drum and bass that has psychiadelic elements in it.
like the Teebee mentioned. Black sience labs are full of tunes with alien planescape melodies and dark sci-fi atmospheres.
more of the pioneers in this dnb style are stakka & skynet (Clockwork LP), ed rush & optical (Wormhole or The Creeps LP), konflict or matrix (Sleepwalk) and plenty more...
this style was called in past as 'techstep' but nowdays is a new wave of producers rising and new term 'neurofunk' (if you want here is the psy-dnb) is being coined.

anyway its all music in the end and you can find plenty fo similarities between each genre.

and what concerns some recent production i would give a listen to some Electrosoul system stuff. Guys from russia making some really good tunes, mostly atmospheric floating beats, close to what was LTJ Bukem, Seba or Big Bud doing but in a new coat. They got recent release on Phuturo (PHUTURO021, drum and bass is still mostly released on vinyls) which is called Goa :]

There was a compilation called 'Clairaudience' that came out on Devic Craft in 2002 that has a few dnb tracks with psy influence that maybe the sound you are referring to...one is by Spyweirdos, the other Spaz-tek...Gappeq has also released some nice dnb influenced tracks recently...

I always understood the 'drum & space' to be sort of the same thing as 'intelligent dnb'....Good Looking Records...artists like LTJ Bukem, Big Bud, Klute....           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~

yes, Big Bud absolutely rules... really nice spaced out synth sauciness across skittering broken beats...

I think he's on Good Looking Records if I'm not mistaken.            - - It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice... - -
