NI Battery is reputed to be the best for general use, I find the drum module in Reason and rex samples to be very useful with Reason softsynths. Depends I would say what kit samples you can get for whatever you use. Battery is probably the most flexible and powerful. Not cheap tho, but u get what u pay for

Take a look at the drummachines from Jomox, especially the jomox Xbase09
http://www.jomox.de/xbase.html

Its sounds are reminding of the 808 and 909 and I'm sure you'd love it.

Always keep in mind that except from the good drum machine and good samples you need
acheiving the right effects(delay,verb..mainly) at the right time to the drums has majority effect on the abience created by the drums in the space of the ambient music.

I vote for battery never let me down ...though you need good samples as it's not a built in samples drum machine.

I was wondering why so many people use Battery for drums instead of Kontakt. Are there functions in Battery that aren't available in Kontakt ?

I don't think so , opposite is correct , i think that kontakt have many functions that battery don't have BUT...

Battery is desined to work with drums it's very comfortable and the functions are very accessible, all drums are spread in small cells right infront your eyes makes battery easy to navigate and work with.

As you might know comfortable and easy use is very important when making music , our aim is to make ourselves as comforable as possible to prevent wasting time on navigating trough menus and submenus instead of doing music. (remember the sequencer key commands... )

The most needed functions like : Pitch ,amp ENV ,pitch ENV , loop ,reverese , AUX channels routing ,matrix modulation ETC are right there so ... it makes it perfect for drumming work.

I'll weigh in here in support of Boobytrip.

I started using Reason's Redrum drum machine/sampler, which was a nice starting point. When I migrated to Cubase I began using Kontakt (recommended by a friend) and have been nothing but frustrated with the fact that it is SO powerful and SO COMPLICATED. I've finally thrown in the towel with Kontakt as a drum programming device and have gone with Battery - thus far I must say it is the best of all three. Easy to navigate, friendly on the eyes, and best of all QUICK TO GET THE JOB DONE.

My heart is for BATTERY!
