hi there folks,

i'm kind of lazy these days to write some drums from scratch, specially on the more energetic parts.

does anyone knows of good loop packages around,? i.e., nice sounding and around 145-150bpm snares, hats n stuff.

thx everyone,
cheers!           https://www.facebook.com/BiijahRecords

Stylus is great, and there's a lot of refills for it, but... you can already hear everybody using a lot of the same loops on released tracks now. Such is the problem with sample CDs.

I bought a drum pad to try to force myself to make new ones but... I, too, am a lazy lazy man.

i really don't understand why u guys are willing to make the effort to make great synth sounds and automation but that u are not willing to make the same effort for drums... They are just as important in the end... And by saying these things u reinforce the reputation that trance producers only use sample cd's and presets....

i agree also...

still stylus is a great tool...

i dont like loops cause i dont have controll over each element.

Fregle, i was just about to say the same that you did... but more that we spend so much time on the bass and kick but the percs that is equally important is okej to cheat with, just cause you can.. hehe

nah loops is for guitarists, ect ect.. that need something to jam to...

This is why Stylus is such a cool tool... you DO have control over each element.

As with most good sample CDs, they give you the individual elements of the loops as well as the loops themselves. I've gotten many sample CDs that had loops that were of no use to me, but the drum kits themselves were pretty good.

Most sample CD's are worthless as they usually have some horrible cowbell or something right in the middle that can't be removed no matter how much EQing or editing you do.

More cowbell!

I like programming a few patterns myself, then export them, then use some fx on different samples in the pattern, and export it too, then fuck it and slice it up like nobody's business.           Dressed to kill you look so right... I am drunk with lust tonite.

Aeon - i only had stylus for some time, i need to investigate more....
do you mean that when you use the slice midi mode?

i tried stylus in a track and it sounded very pro, and i know i couldnt stand for it so i dont use it in loop mode.. cause i dont want to get good critic on a loop i didnt make, and people say nothing else about the track.. hehe that would feel real silly...

havn't really tried Stylus, is there a demo. I'm sure it's a pretty pricy piece of software.

Right now I've actually finally started making kits with RMIV. I think it's making a difference.

I go though with a drum pad controller I have, Akai Mpd16 and I make a kit with all the available pads (16). I do this by just browsing through the samples I have and hitting the pads till I have a bunch of different samples that seem to sound good together. I'll make sure to give my self some short hats, medium ones, and longer ones. Same with snares, more noisy one, heavier one, and a short punchy one. Then I put in some hand drums, and some bigger drums like taiko sounding ones or something. Then also a good kick that I can alter if needed.

When I start a song I open one of these pre made kits, and I don't find myself getting lazy about adding more drums. Their all right there already. This way I can get an Idea layed out. If I don't thing the drums fit later and can just browse through them and change them later. This is working for me so far, but I wouldn't mind trying something like Stylus as well I think it could be interesting.

Though I've kinda learned that I should just master what I have or I'll never get anywhere.

I can add new stuff once I've already learn what I have like the back of my hand....or maybe the palm of my hand hehe

Once you have enough equipment to make professional sounding music, just stop and master it. It's made a huge difference already in my tracks. Sorry for the long rant, it just what this made me think of, but I guess you didn't have to read it either did you.

in stylus if you go to the mixer page and select kit mode you can use it as a drum kit. you pick kick, snares, hats, toms etc for each part and they will automatically map themselves into the correct GM slot. change the midi mode to channel 10 if your using a GM drum map. you can also layer the kits, so if you select 2 snare kits the snare hits will be layered. you can also change the parts of the kits at any time if your not happy with the one you used initially.

you can use edit groups to set adsr/filtering/chaos/effects for each individual hit, both in kit mode and multi mode. if you click the grill bit near the bottom you can access it, you can create a group for each hit, or all of the ones on upbeats, downbeats, 16ths etc etc. it worth checking out the edit groups section of the manual.

beats having to wade through directories of samples, load them all up into battery, map them into the right gm slots, add your effects to the insert chain etc etc. you can still use groups/sends on the stylus output if you want too. stylus is a nice little interface for drum programming, lots of high quality and very varied samples, good effects. well worth the cash imo. you can also use your own recycle'd files and samples and stuff too. the people who think its just for canned loops are just showing their lack of knowledge and/or shortsightedness.

my only real complaint is sometimes 8 slots isnt enough, but you can just have another instance of it, and also sometimes it doesnt load up the multi/kit when it starts. but apart from that i think its pretty neat.

hi folks!

thx everyone for the ideas. =)

i agree with a lot of what's been said here, and i'll give stylus a try.

meanwhile, i downloaded ueberschall "techno-trance essentials" and it was somehow satisfying in some ocassions, like hh loops and fxs. but, it was not sufficient to get the energy i wanted so i'm still ending up writting all the stuff in the piano roll.

so, what u guys use for samples? my drums usually came out from Native Instruments Synthethic Drums I&II, Drumkit from Hell and some Akais.

Any good packages around?

=)

Thx for the great conversation,
Cheers!

I like Thomas Penton's essential drums and percussion.

one place you can purchase it anyway.

It's got tons of great single hit samples I can always find what I'm looking for drum wise.

oh you can also listen to a little preview of stuff made with the sample pack. They really are really great samples.

Dude ... if you can hear them in alot of tunes then the artist is not putting any effort into it. The beauty of rex an stylus is that it can be changed.           http://www.coldproject.co.za
