Drum fills...

Any advice for a non drummer to learn how to pogram drumfills... you know those ending phrases before crash hits: kicks, snares, toms and hats... but how to get them rolling and fluent?

I know basics about rythm and drums (dont have any physical one tho), anything is welcomed.

Thanks.

I was thinking about this too today actually and wondering if there are midi files of drum fills just to learn, or samples just to learn from.

For me, mixing up in 16ths snare and toms does good, throwing in some kick here and there.

some examples (in triplet 16ths):

k = kick s = snare

k.s.s.k.s.s.k.s.s.k.s.k.s.

i use this fill a lot, and if you move around stuff, as long as it's quantized it sounds great. I think that goes for any fill.

what i usually do is take a drum fill sample, cut it up, combine different ones together until you get something that you like. If you can figure out what tempo they are in, you can also see how they did it.

set up an arpeggio that controls your sampler. even stack two arps together and fill the sampler with alot of nice one hit samples. check out different timings, note pitch steps and whatever comes to mind.

gives you instant drumrolls. bit unpredictable but sample the output and pick the ones you like best

work with triplet grid, quantize your stiff beat and move the notes around. trial and error often in my case.

think like a drummer... he's got two arms and two legs. so basically never hit more than 4 samples together... ;D also don't forget ghost hits, velocity IS KEY and don't place everything on the grid.

think of tension, no sparkles without an opposite

work with loops, cut them to build your basic pattern and introduce the full loop for rolls, trigger, retrigger and glitch them (if you're into that stuff)

reopen some of these beats, choose one, copy it over and set the start point to different locations. 1. k, 2. hh, 3. snr and so on, take some elements like fast cl parts (like fast ch) and leave them how they're originally played... match the quantisation level so you can trigger these samples and they'll fit always into the tempo of your other stuff. now simply experiment and I'm sure you'll get good variations

take a james brown drumloop, use your sequencer's ability to match the time signature/groove of your stiff programmed beat to the timing of that nice drumperformance. imperfection!

use your mouth, slow down your sequencer's master tempo and get grooving... with a resolution of < 1/32 you should be able to recreate that beatboxing in midi^^ even record your beatbox and receate it with samples. good samples are key. Also think about the tempo of your track... samples recorded with long attacks probably won't give you the smack for drumrolls. So set your attacks carefully.

but in the end I usually spread out a sample-set to my piano and just record 10 turns of wild mashing of those keys, recording energetic and soft moments for breaks. After these 10 turns I normally get something that works. Even if it's only one matching roll left I take that and try to recreate it on the piano again. I spice it up now that I know how to play it and change the notes around until I get variations that match into the picture.

btw, is this whole "YOU do that and this" thing unpolite in english? I keep falling back writing my phrases as if they're my native language.

I'm all about laying out individual hits in the audio arrange window as raw as can be

I'm trying to get my drums sounding more like real drums these days with the obvious exception of the kick, but obviously fills are a big part of that, even smaller less obvious ones.

For inspiration I look to this guy:

MIKE PORTNOY!

you should check out some of his videos on youtube. Good rhythms, you get those heavy 16th kick lines just like psy breaks have too.

Here's a video of him describing how to create this disorienting pattern in the beginning of the song using some syncopation. so people listening can't tell where the "1" is.

take a short hard snare (like in a military march).

-take them 16th...
-everything you have to do is, to set the velocity in your sampler... start with zero, ang go up to 100.

you also can accent some hits of the snare with velocity.
example : [X=loud, o= not loud]

X-o-o-X-o-o-X-o-

this gives the groove, but you wont hear that much in psy in your desired fills.           www.soundcloud.com/orgytime

Hi this is great advice... I'm going to try this as soon as my laptop comes back from repair!!
Thanx for the tip.. Could you maybe upload some examples of what you have archived with this method?
Thanx again.

hi icedice

I haven't done anything lately except some silly tunes while riding the train.

I'll have a look if I can put something together but don't hold your breath.

Gonna send u a pm when it's ready, if it will ever be ready. Too many things to do

this arpeggio kind of thing triggering drumsamples is a pretty good way tho, try it

meanwhile, try this link:

I actually started making some dnb. The loops aren't that hard, either listen to some and replicate it or get some sample packs.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

1. sample tons of old funk records
2. "rough" them up with overdrive/distortion/saturation
3. stretch them to your desired tempo
4. cut them up into little rhythmical pieces
5. now go crazy with layering stuff: have heavy-hitting one shot samples for kick and snare doing a simple step-ish beat and use the little chunks that you sampled and cut-up for that junglish "parradidle" effect. filtering and careful eq work is important, so that each layer occupies it's own space.
6. process all these together to glue them (reverb, compression)
7. bounce and cut-up this new single loop
8. go crazy with the new slices, rearranging them or layering them some more.

i think that's the general approach. layering and resampling.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance
