@vector_0 so what's the motivation for getting dreads? (don't have to answer here if you don't want to).

well, like i said, i want to get rid of my lip ring for didgeridoo purposes, but i don't want to give up having some funkiness or whathaveyou to my look. i don't want other piercings and i don't have tons of money to spend on tattoos (also i don't have any good ideas for tattoos nor do i know a good tattoo artist). and in general, i've had the same look for about 5 years now and thought i'd update
Dreadlocks seem to give a person a sort of presence that I always admired (and frankly would like to take advantage of as a musician...might give me a bit more "street cred" ). I'd never really considered it til recently, but now that its on my mind i'm thinking more and more that i would look good with dreads and they would suit my personality. Also, I recently landed a job to which I telecommute, so I don't have to worry about impressing the corporate world or whatever. and after getting the OK from my girlfriend, I haven't really heard any good reasons why I shouldn't

its just a question of look... u like, u use, u dont like, u dont use..
but its boring to let the hair grow.. and if ur hair is very thin like mine, ud have to brush it or it doesnt make rastas.. it makes some fur bal lol..
but its great my hair is growing for 4 year.. i might shave it all, save the hair, grow a few more years and put all in my head rasta style... then i wont have to brush it anymore..
plur
I want a spare brain.... or 2.

I grew dreads through sheer laziness. Ive never been satisfied with haircuts EVER so I have a sort of phobia, and I cant ever decide how to comb my hair, and its frizzy wavy dark brown that fluffs out hardcore if I shampoo and comb it regularly. So I decided to stop doing all that and let it grow.
I didn't really do anything to my hair, in a sense it was an experiment to see if it would dread without any effort (remember the idea is laziness). It took about 4 years for them to really become noticable dreads rather than a mess, and its been about 6 years total that Ive let my mop go.
I used to work a job that had me outside in the weather a lot, and Id tie up my hair into a bun to keep it at bay, which together allowed lots of opportunity for the beginning tangles to form, which to my delight they did. Basically the beginning tangles attracted more hair, and became denser and denser over the years. The one thing I did do to keep it from matting together into one giant hippie-pillow (which i think looks like a homeless person) was to make sure to pull them apart, as dreads tend to tangle together, sometimes from different parts of the scalp. SOmetimes this can even be painful if there is tension pulling the hair.
Idk what everyone else does in regards to washing, but I wash my hair around once a week, thoroughly, and if possible use some kind of non-residue soap. The only reason I dont wash it more often is because its a PAIN in the ASS to dry it all. Its close to 3 feet long (I have to make sure it doesnt hang into my asscrack while on the toilet ) and retains water for hours.
Lately ive been thinking of trimming or even getting rid of the whole thing; its heavy man! I tend to keep it tied back which makes this whole mass of hair i have to manage, which can be awkward. Any chair with a headrest becomes a double headrest with the addition of my hair... And its been so long i dont even remember what i look liek with short hair, or what it feels like (I imagine my head would feel lighter). Im torn, its been so long and so many memories, these ropes have been with me for a lot...
Personally I like dreads that look natural. Ive seem salon-done dreads that look like extensions, or whatever backcombed or whatnot techniques that just seemed too much work to me, and dont quite look the same as ones that gradually accumulated. I like that idea; hair style that isnt created so much as deposited like stalagmites on a cave floor.

^Generally I'm not a fan of thick manly dreads on my woman, prefer the ’Gone In 60 Seconds Angelina Jolie typ of dreads if dreads at all, much more sexy and I like to pull my fingers through her long hair :b.. Did I say in general, not as law.. ::Ok some ranting about me and my hair, please scroll over and ignore me! text and pictures if not interested.
I've wanted dreads for years, always liked them and the energy they give/hold. 7 years ago or so I started to save for dreads (1st time), my current girlfriend approved (yes we need their approval for stuff ). Thing for me is that I have retrieving hairlines, not a bald moon spot but still very thin in the front hair since I was 19 and I’m at the writing moment 30 years old. Anyway I wanted to try. After a year + of saving with a lot of cap wearing since I felt I looked funny without a cap. I cancelled my dream so I backed down and shaved my hair off. …Actually, I remember sitting in my friends chair, she was going to make my first dreads which for me was a huge moment. Sitting there, looking at my self and my hair in the mirror, I whimped out because stupidly enough I feared (we all have some narsecistic sides I guess at times) that it would look too strange or something with dreads on a head with such thin hairlines.. My girlfriend had dumbed me by this time, or I dumped her, doesn't matter.. So back to skinned/short cut.
A time passed and I still had this intense inner wish to grow dreads, it felt like dreadlocks was supposed to be a part of me, a signature, my flag. U know? I had a bald (pun intended) moment and decided to give it another og! So from being skinned or at least very short I decided to let it grow free (again). I saved for a couple of years going through all the growth processes. Its ,,pain" sometimes the growth time, the akward periods of looking silly, wearing a cap maybe a bit too often for own taste. Anyway, I pulled my self through it all and when the hair was about jaw + lengh I had an appefini, I wanted to do something unique, something that would fit me and my hairline better. I decided to make a patch on the back of my head (my idea was later confirmed while watching Acopolypse, the Mel Gibson running indians in jungle movie), being skinned except for this place which would be filled with dreads.
At that time I had not seen anyone or at least very few people with this look I thought it was original Ok Betcha as soon as I had had them for some time, I would notice how many others in the world, and especially in psywrold that would have the same idea/hairdoo. Though my patch was and is always it seems slightly different from others with same principle of hairdoo. I am unique, just like everyone else
By councidence, my dreadlocks started as 11 dreads (very soon it's gonna be 3 years since I got them), went down to 7 as they merged and changed over time. Today I got 6 but couple of them are doubles. Hare krishna? no man, hare Shiva No, maybe Hare Yeti in some years? heheh (Mattman ;D). To people like granmothers who complain and ask me to cut them off, I’ll give the answer I’ve always given; I love them, I am confirtble with them and maybe one day I will grow tierd of them and cut em off, who knows what the future brings. But I guess if I have a girlfriend and she wants me to cut em off and I love her, I will do it for her as my hair means nothing compared to love and devotion <3
Today after three years my dreads are passed shoulder lenght.

Today a native Indian from the states came up to me to talk about my dreads. Or more correct, my specific hairstyle. He first asked like so many others if it was about Hare Krishna.. (have you ever seen a Hare Krishna person with dreads? as far as I know, Hare Krishna got this small worm like thing on their backhead) I gave him my reasons and my connections that it is more Shiva then Krishna, and that the influence is defiently more South American indian and that all in all, this comes from me, my inner self, not from here or there. He told me that some tribes would have hair like mine (i guess again without dreads!) but also with Mohawk. Only when they got elder, more balanced and wise would they remove the mohawk and keep only the patch. So I had to be wise he thought(:: This guy was very friendly and nice, and he had a wicked tribal tattoo on his face, like a thin classy scar going from his forhead, over his eye and down his cheek. Very nice and kool!
Anyway, I logged in to mention something about propper dreadlocks and smell.
A dude at my school yeears ago, he got a full set of dreadlocks and know what,, how they was made? With Cow shit!! He stunked the whole school with that shit, holy shit in dreads .. Now thats dedication. Anyone else know people who use shit (instead of ash like the sadhu) to make dreads proppà?
He later released this track:
made some bucks, built a studio and was never heard of again ... and as you can see in this video, he cut off his stinking dreads
