Sorry if this is a bit OT, but this is probably the largest community of dreadlocked folks I am a part of. Mods, please move this thread to the appropriate forum if you feel its necessary.

So, I'm wondering if any of you out there could give some pro's or con's to having dreadlocks. I met someone who dreads hair professionally and am thinking of having it done.

some questions to get the think tank chugging that you don't necessarily have to answer:

how long have you had dreads?
when are the times when it is difficult?
when are the times when it is great?
do you miss being able to run your fingers through your hair (or have someone else run their fingers through your hair)?
have you ever had to deal with bugs in your dreads?
ever had to deal with a smell?
to people who used to have dreads:
why did you get rid of them?
did you cut them off entirely, or have them "un-dreaded"?
do you miss them?

thanks for any input you may have!           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

If I wasn't a blonde white boy I'd have the coolest afro or dreads in the world. But as you can see at my avatar I'm shaved so dreads would take me a few years

A friend of mine has the biggest dreads I've ever seen though he is a member here and makes music under the moniker of AstroNivo.

Cheers,

the best and the most easiest way is to not cut and not use a comb at all, after some time the hair will start to make dreadlocks, but it will need some time for the whole hair to have dreadlocks...
this way you avoid problems with smell, the dreads look natural, and they are soft, so when you sleep they dont hurt your face, you dont need to put any chemicals, and you can clean them the same way like you clean your hair.
i have made dreadlocks to over 20 people till now, and couple of times on my hair, and i found out that this is the easyest way(by the way the dreadlocks of sadhus in india and rasta of people in jamaica is made this way)

also it depends on what tipe of hair you have, i can giwe you some advices if you send me a picture of you with a shot of the hair           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

I had dreadz for round 10 years, shaved them last year. Didnt have the issue with smell, went natural as demoniac said. Didnt use weird chemicals and didnt comb for a long time. My hair was curly\wavy so after a while they started mixing together. After this phase, just use hands to round them together and you can also back comb, which works. Dont like the idea of people paying to get their dreadz made... Dont think it fits in the process...

It was all good timez, no problem with bugz that I noticed I cut them cause I felt it was about time for a change, and I didnt look after them as well as I should. After showers, be sure to dry them really well and get all the water outta them, otherwise they can start to mold also you have to separate them well or one day you end up with one dread alltogether. Be prepared for stereotypes. People ascribe too much meaning to dreadz and think of you a certain way... I like this phase but there are times i do miss them.

Im sorrounded by dreadlockers. .

my advice is "dont get them"..
compare it to a jamaican making his hair straight and blond...

plus...i dont know about natural way and chemical way..but trust me they do smell on many ppl...

and let me add...
a real good friend with dreads...cut them after a holiday in Jamaica...he told me that there he realized how funny white people look with dreads (to blacks).. not to mention the jamaicans making fun of him and some even threatening to kick his ass cus considered it a disrespectful thing. .

but again...
if YOU like them...get them. you can always cut it off...

You can smuggle some stuff in your hair.

dreadz isnt a "black" or "white" thing. It may be suited more to people with a certain kind of hair but as mentioned, Sadhus, dervishes etc are known to have dreadlocks. Dreadlocks is not equal to Rastafari...           `Bottomless wonders spring from simple rules, which are repeated without end` Mandelbrot

Had them for over an year.
Mine were not smelly. I used to wash them every 2 days.
When you do wash them you should dry them with a towell, squeezing'em. Specially at night time and before going to sleep.

Had a lot o fun in that year.Chicks in Brazil love it.

dreadlocks is not about black or white, people all over the world wear them, from ancient times till now, popularity of bob marley made them to be jamaican or black style, i think they are here since the begining of mankind, if you look the process of making them, you will realize why...           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

I developed dreads in the back of my head inadvertently from doing lots of situps every day (hands behind my head). I surf and play at the beach a lot so when I finally cut them off they were full of sand! Funny but kinda nasty.

If i am not mistaken dont the Sadhus rub the ash form the bodies which have been cremated on to their bodies and hair and get those awesome locks. Correct me if i m wrong.

maybe the aghori sadhus, but not all the holy ash is from the cremation ground, and yes ash is offcourse part of the process, but they dont put the ash to make the dreadlocks, maybe you saw the aghori on youtube washing his hair with ashes and water?
ahses is not enough to make dreadlocks
for making this kind of dreadlocks, sometimes you need more then a year...           VA - Spiritual Science out now!
