How do you draw with a graphic EQ, especially EQUO, the graphic EQ bundled with FL Studio.

I normally use the pencil mode of drawing, so that each band is like an individual slider rather than using the curve, that as the name suggests causes a curve relative to the band you're adjusting. Is using a curve pattern, rather than a step based pattern that you'd get when using the pencil tool, a better choice at shaping a sound, rather than drawing abrupt, angular steps that comes with the pencil tool?

Should the pencil tool only really be used for easily cutting or boosting certain bands and not for actually EQing through the whole spectrum.

Sorry if this doesn't make that much sense, but I'm not sure how to word it.

Haha, sorry...Let me try rephrase. This is only really relevant to the EQUO plugin, though.

Which is the better drawing mode when using the plugin? The pencil or curve mode? In which situations would you use each?

The top window uses the Pencil mode, while the lower one uses the Curve mode. As you can see with the pencil mode, the position of each band's fader is very linear and precise, while the curve has more of a gradient between each band's fader...They both form roughly the same shape, but which drawing mode would sound smoother? (The example is just a random shape, I generally don't boost frequencies and put more effort into my shapes. )

Another thing, I also have a habit of totally cutting out frequencies I don't want instead of just lowering their volume. My kick might only be made up of four bands, from 80 to around 200 while every thing else is totally cut...Is this not a good method of EQing?

i use the pencil mode i like to make my adjustments in exact places of the spectrum.
curve mode drags to many freqs around the one i want.

but pencil mode is more for mixing sounds and make surgical edits...
curve mode is more like a mastering full mix adjustment option.

but always work with what u feel it sounds better and make u more comfortable.

i use equo only for panning freqs and not for real eq work.
for this parametric eq and eq2 are much better in my opinion.

Oooh, panning frequencies...Never done that, but I can imagine it adds a whole new dimension to the sound.

I've never been able to work my head around parametric EQs, I don't really get the different modes, like notch, low shelf etc. I like graphic EQs because I can actually see what I'm adjusting.

yes the pan seperation of single freqs makes me drool.. but in some way i still rather the logic's one.
about curve or single freq's i guess it realy depend on the sound , but usualy curve sound more natural to me , as well 6db or 12db filters rather then 36 or 48 db ones. but again , no rules , i might open 36db filter on my next sound
what sounds good sounds good... no way around it , so bypass your eq and simply go "better/worse" and u get the real answer (as long u in ok enviourment with good monitors)          www.sattelbattle.com
