Dr. DNA is Andreas Kruger a.k.a Der Dritte Raum, one of the classic techno projects out of Germany in the early 90's. Der Dritte Raum was a huge influence on many artists in the trance scene today such as Son Kite, and Andreas has numerous albums and releases under many other different names. The latest Der Dritte Raum was recently out on Virgin.

Save to Disc is the label of Peter Hollenbach, who used to dj as Mahasuka (one of my favorite dj's) and his production partner Stefan.

This release is truly special. The whole 11 tracks are mixed, and this is essential for the album. This is not a random collection of dance floor burners with a ambient track tossed in on the end. This whole album works like one extended idea. When I heard Metalbase alone as a single, I didn't really get it, but when I heard it heard it here, it was awesome. The same goes for most of the tracks here. The first seven tracks work as a slow build, so when you hit Metalbase you want to explode, but softly.

If I had to choose a name for this kind of music, I would call it "whisper trance". This is the kind of music that is so delicate that you don't want anyone to talk loudly around you when dancing to it. You want the whole floor to fall into a quiet whisper.

The delicate melodies seem to bubble out of the sky, dance around a while, and then disappear. The harmonic structures are just beautiful--lots of simple repeating patterns that build on top of each other into something breathtaking. Everything build organically, and there's not a single annoying sound or voice sample on the whole disc.

I've never heard any dance music that is as peaceful as this. When it finished, I felt completely relaxed and hypnotized. I have no idea how most people would react to this on the dance floor (it would have to be outside on a sunny afternoon), but I for one would be sitting down, dancing in slowmotion in my mind with my eyes closed.

The only music I can compare this too is some of the more minimal tracks on the 1st Son Kite album, Minilogue, but this is much softer and warmer and less energetic.

If you want something peaceful, hypnotic, and beautiful, I recommend this very highly. Just remember to keep your voice down...

10/10

p.s. The first time I heard this on headphones, so I couldn't hear how amazing the bass sounds. I just listened again on proper speakers, and the basslines are just heavenly: very musical and creative, and so warm and fat and funky. Perfect for swimming in on a hot summer's day

this is an amazing CD (and an amazing review too, russ). I second every word in your review.

This is a fluffy, smiley, happy CD and I love the cd design (the print on the CD itself...)

Gonna listen to it now! thanks for reminding me russ

its finest dance music around for sure!
got this album few months before but never wrote a review since i felt it will be too much for a isratrance:)
Andreas Kruger may be the most intelligent and crossover producer in the electrionic music, i was allways shocked to hear his DDR albums and now this Dr.DNA.

crystalline structures has to be one of the most perfect creations i've ever heard. just like a perfect crystal.

when listening to this i had a very funny idea. i thought let's pretend we have a lot of scientists analyzing the emotion of joy (say the joy of a little boy running around playing with his beloved dog), and then drawing a schematic diagram of this emotion that forms a pattern of a crystal. then our team of scientists takes this pattern, throws it into a computer, and renders it into sound. the result: the track crystalline structures (sorry to bore everyone, but my mind goes into funny directions when listening to good music)

this album's like listening to the sound of a smile. this is the 1st time i've heard such fluffy, smiley music done in such a serious and intelligent way.

i don't know much of his earlier work, but i really think andreas kruger is a genius.

karnaf, i agree. graphic design, and especially the inner design, is fantastic. what a perfect package for this music.

and zombi, glad to hear there's at least 1 dj out there with the ears to play this music!
