hey guys..
my last tracks i ve been working with the kick hitin at - 11 db.... and exportin the mixed track at -4 db for the master..
then my last track the dude who mastered told me the level of the kick and the bass was too low... that i should let them high almost at - 5 when doin the track and export like that...and just reduce the master lvl so the mix would peak at -4...
but well he s not a profisional master... he s just practicin..
so i was wonderin it...
kick must be high db at the mix ?
i thought the master enginer was the one supposed to raise it with the rms....

kick -10 db
bass -12 db
If by the way you are on cubase right-click on bass pan control you'll notice that cubase provides a choice of two additional types of pan control for each channel. The Stereo Dual Panner gives you two Balance panners in the space of one, so that you can control the panning for each side of a stereo signal separately. The Stereo Combined Panner puts both left and right controls in the same field, with a filled blue area between them to show the width of the field. Set the bass to center. |

-4 sounds good to me. What he probably meant is that the bass/kick could be higher in level in the mix. But that is a matter of taste i'd say. If you checked it on a few soundsystems and it sounds good stick with it.

that way s just too fucked up coz then would get clippin lot easier coz of the other sounds...even doin good cutin... the leads and pads would have to be too dang low...
and well i know do like it sounds good , i m just askin here coz i use the lvl of the kick as reference when i start workin in the music.... so lets say i write and produce the music at -12 with the kick...it destroy all the work if i have to put it lot higher to the master...
so if its indeed good to have the kick really that loud at the mix then i d write and produce the track with the kick almost there...

i may be wrong, but shouldn't bass+kick peak around the same level as the louder of the two (in most cases the kick)? if they peak significantly higher (-6 when the kick is -11) you probably got a muddy low end... |

I use my kick at -10db and the bass around it depends on project and style...
I like head room... and level gets fixed at mastering. |

exactly.
depending on personal preferences i would first try to adjust the length of kick and bass, then eq them so they both have their own frequency range and if this all does not help (what it should do) then you can sidechain compress.
also if you need to lower the volume of your pads when rising kick and bass, then you most likely have too much low end and should eq the pads better. |

That's highly subjective to the way the sounds are. Not something anyone can use really.
If it sound good it's good!
- 4 to -6 in the final mix is a good guideline
