Hi, I am a smaller organizer in Japan getting ready for the outdoor season. I want to organize a gathering that is beyong just music and dancing (although I mean in no way to put belittle that!!!). It is just that many ppl here are not as environmentally, or socially conscious as have seen in other parts of the world, and I would like to bring more awareness into the community.

From my limited readings about doofs I have basically gathered that it is much more than just an outdoor party. I have read that at a 'doof' many ideas are presented such as indigenous ppls rights, tips on sustainable living, and other such ideas that are community oriented and helps bring about compassionate action.

Again I know VERY little about this subject and my assessment could be completely wrong. But if this type of gathering does indeed promote such ideas I would like to ask the help of partygoers and organizers about what they have seen/put together. As an organizer, I want to know things like are there workshop type spaces and what they do, distribution of literature, group discussions, etc etc. Any info is greatly appreciated and would help bring more awareness to the Japanese trance scene. Links to articles would be great as well as personal accounts/opinions.

Thanks, hope to see some responses!

Love and Light,

cool thans Asher, if you (or others) could give me more tips on how to promote the ideas seen at Doofs more effectively at outdoors in Japan, it would be great help. Basically, help me in throwing the closest thing to a doof here in japan! Here the parties are so commercial most ppl have forgotten what its all about. I would like tips on things that help bring ppl together and spread awareness. thanks!

Spliffnik,

At least in Sydney, what you are talking about doesn't really exist as an intentional effort. Generally what we do is very different from Japan, but we don't focus on the issues that you speak of.

However we do put a lot of work into creating an environment where people who are interested in those issues will feel at home. This is I think where we really differ - in the environment that we create. We often have as organic spaces as possible, deep in forests, and put a great deal of work into the production - not just lights and sound, but all of the decor as well, from the banners to installations. And as much as possible we try to have our decor integrated with the surrounding rather than contrasting it. By this I mean that instead of massive blow-up fluro things, we have objects with natural colours, focusing on natural themes. We still have the UV-active fluoro banners that are now pretty standard through-out parties.

The key is not to push the themes of alternative living and other more confronting ideas. Instead, provide an atmosphere where these themes can be easily felt by people. Make sure the members of your organisation lead by example - even the smallest things like handing out garbage bags and film canisters (for cigarette butts) - this sets a feeling to be more environmentally conscious. Have people always cleaning up - people who are obviously also party-goers, not just hired help. If people can feel that those who are part of the production are also just like themselves, then the barrier between the two will fade.

Because I think the key here is to blur the line between participation and specatation - this is probably what is being lost in Japan. People need to go to a party and feel they are part of the party, not just attending the party. Once they reach this realisation they can more easily see themselves as a part of the party organisim, and see it in turn as part of society, and everything else falls into place.

Asher - this guy is asking about how he can apply the theories behind the Australian Doof scene to the Japanese Psytrance scene. I don't see how you see this as an opportunity for blatent self-promotion.
