How many of you have organized / attended a party where you didn´t have to pay to get in, it was only expected that you would donate as much as you saw fit.
To orgs: Did it work? Did you loose too much money? what was the experience like?
To all: Did you donate? How much (% of what you expented in the party)?

Well that about it

Chap, we do these in the UK all the time...

Generally, they kinda break-even when donations and drink sales are taken into account...

But, if you want to *make* money, charge something fixed (only in the UK that opens you up to lots of nasty law things )

open air you always have to deal with such situation unless you have fences all around the party, and a massive security.

if you send away someone that affirms having no money he will for sure try to get in from somewhereelse, so you have to deal for the price many times.

but the legitimate question to such people could be:
hey man what the fuck you think doing in a party without money..!'!?!??! if i have no money i stay home, or not ?!?! you already knew from flier what the entry fee was, so what the fuck did you come here for??? stop pisssssing me off and get the money ready or i'll kill you..!!!!!

We throw small events where the expenses are already budgeted in. The djs we get play for free or for a small gas donation, as does our sound tech. That combined with generator rental and miscellaneous, it usually never gets more expensive than 300 bucks and we as the organizers make sure that we can cover this without the need to charge donations. If we get a decent amount of donations, then any surplus after expenses gets paid out to the djs.

For us, there are a lot of individuals that would not be exposed to the electronic music scene outside of wannabe clubs, if it weren't for our outdoor renegades. I feel it's a public service to throw the parties for the kids in the area, hopefully enticing them to occasionally go up to the bay area for events.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

That's what I call "Killa® organizer"!

I have some experience in making some small parties for free here in Brazil, Watter.

I don't think donnations is a good alternative, people around here is not educated to do that.

If you manage to find a place (with electricity), DJs and quality equipment for free, I think you can throw a small party here in Brazil for less than R$ 400,00. This should cover security and free water for everyone.

Also with the donation system, a lot of people won't give you anything, so don't expect much. I think people here will think "Donnation means I give money only if I want to, so I think I'll buy another beer".

Hey Full On waz up?
Are you from SP RJ or BH? Thanks for the tip but I kind of know the scene here quite well.... I broght Melicia a couple years ago so I more or less know the costs involved.
Just to be clear it is not my intention to make money with the scene, I was just wondering what was the experience of other ppl with this.
I do intend to organize some free/ donation parties, but I know that most ppl here do think kind of like what Full On said.... so it always makes me wander if it is worth it.....

I'm from Brasília, but I'm living at São Carlos - SP.

Making free parties (or donation) demands a lot of work and some money, but I think it's worth the trouble... It's nice to see a lot of people dancing and having fun just because you wanted to do the party and really did it!

Underground is the way, no big names, no superstars or ego-trips, just making the best you can so that people can enjoy it. You sure will gonna have some problems, but when you're dealing with money and "big names" you got much bigger problems.

I'm often playing at free parties... they usually don't bother asking for donations because people are cheap. If they don't have to pay they usually don't. I did a donation party once - expenses were about $300, donations amounted to like 40 bucks... basically if the money can be spent on beer or whatever then that's where it goes. It's not a problem if you don't expect to get -any- donations though just don't rely on them. It could be different in other cultures.
Peace.
