Don't you love those accidents when you're working, that lead you onto awesome new creative moments and things you wouldn't have thuoght of doing...
like I did tonight, copying some midi parts, i got em one track out, and didn't realise it. I played back the tune from the previous section which is quite melodic, and joooop into the next section and it's all wonked up but purrfect for the tune... melodic into wonky just works so well.
so then i got thinking about mapping out the moods of the tune, so I've written out:
smooth intro -> melodic -> wonky -> trancey -> percussive and so on.
If I just write a couple of mood sections per evening after work I could have finshed the tune by next week! That would be really fast for me perhaps by knowing where I'm going next I'll get it all done faster. Worth a try huh.
I once played this DJ set in Holland (for 6 hours) where I thought I'd figured out all of the moods in trance... it was an awesome moment of realisation... that the crowd wanted to experience melody, darkness, tribal(percussion), trippy, etc etc... knowing what mood the crowd want to go into next is deffo part of good djing skills.
I feel like a tune should work like a DJ set but on a smaller scale - so that you have elements creating various different moods throughout the track, perhaps with a dominant theme, or maybe a combination of themes or so on....
This post is turning into a bit of a brain dump! Anyhoo, thought I'd share what's been going on here

My only accident that has happened and has made me trying it out more often, is misplacing a midi file by 1/8th or some other small interval, which led to a compreletely differnt drive from using the same bass/lead line, 8 bars down the track and just kept things interesting.
I don't really think about mapping out a tune any time other than when I am actually building the arrangement. What does happen an awful lot of times, is writting a bassline/leadline in my mind when I am at work, and then I have to hum the damn thing in my head until I get off work, run home and write the midi file down before I forget it!

probably thats what is psychedelic about, everything Because everything is changing, open doors, feel, next door, taste, dance, passages everywhere, sticking into one feeling sometimes if not lots of times make you bored, the journey stick on one path, one feeling without games of mind
Btw i love those "accidents" happening with the synths, sometimes "wrong" lfo sync, or when jamming & twisting knobs and record that sometimes i get good sounds that fit parts where i couldnt do it with a mouse and thought, it just happened and sit nicely
nice thoughts andrew, especially for playing live, it surely can be an awesome experience (imo Dick Trevor does that veeeery well )

yeah it's funny you know this forum is full of people talking about production techniques but not much talk about the creativity or inspiration or vision that actually writes the music! Perhaps this is why "all_psytrance_sounds_the_same".
It's good to share your feelings and ideas!

I went back to the first tracks I made with Reason. I basically picked the best patches I could find and modulated random things based on how it sounded. The tracks were complete crap but the sounds and how they flowed were much more interesting than some of the rubbish I make now.. |

yeah right!
I wonder if I've got so obsessed with my production skills that... well no...
what I do when I feel like that is just bring up synths and just go crazy with effects and madness of sounds like I did when i first started and was blown away by all the awesome feelings and sounds i could generate.
I find the best way to stay in tune with the music, and not my mental abstraction of what the music is doing, is go and stand in my kitchen (next to the studio) and have a dance. Keep dancing and you will have the mindset of a punter on the dancefloor hearing your tunes. Or get someone else to listen to it!
Cheers

word!
I have to say this has happened in almost every track i've made so far. some accident, twist of fate, ghost voice, mechanical anamoly, or 1 bar misplaced that happened to create some groove that took the track to a different place
balanced appropriately perhaps by my loose and chaotic production style lol

i know totally what your talking about, and I think this is what makes music (and life!) so great and full of potential. There are ghosts in the machine, and nature/the cosmos is very much alive!
But, it is hard to quantify, and difficult for some people to accept, or respect, i.e. that everything should be planned and subjugated by the human intellect.
