you just need to keep the signal to noise ratio in mind when boosting in eq. if the particular sound has to much white noise, it's obviously not wise to boost any freqancies...would be wisest not to use that sound actually.
also when you've cut sertain frequancies before bouncing a sound, DO NOT BOOST THOSE FREQUANCIES AGAIN. if you cut them, their gone. you will only replace them with signal noise if you boost it again.
i think most producers know this though. but in case you didn't ... |

Hey all! Great advice in this thread
i like the "NyquistEq"
it says its a Paragraphic eq.
When you cut something, something else gets boosted, but i guess that is based on the plugs algorithm, which is modeld after the nyquist theory?
but not all eq´s works this way, by adding when you subtract?
which do, and which dont?
"NyquistEq
Parametric graphic equalizer with excellent response all the way up to Nyquist. It never clicks, and it handles deep bass well too. The Nyquist frequency is the highest representable frequency for a given sample rate. The trebliest of the treble. Most other digital eqs have great problems producing a natural sound here."

That kind of depends on how much you cut them in the first place, I think. True 100% notches are fairly rare; most EQs can cut by 24dB at the very most. Besides, it's a useful technique with analog EQ (and some really well-coded digital ones) to cut and boost at the same place; Ott does this and he says it gives a kind of 'halo' around the sound.

Yep, phase shifting, group delays, pre/post ripples etc. On the other hand, REALLY well coded digital EQs won't do this if they are phase accurate. Well they will change the sound but not the same way as analogue EQs do.

Superb stuff mates ........
So .... what i gather from what's been mentioned so far is that ....
Digital EQ will boost frequencies based on the way they are programmed. You have to trust your ears when using these.
Analogue EQ are true limiters which control the EQ better. Technically more sound tools for control.
Experts .. correct me if i'm wrong please!!

no its not so hard if you know it
every freq you cut will boost some freq, but what are the freq that will be boosted? just double the freq you cut
like this:
cut the 500hz this will boost the 1k
cut the 300hz this will boost the 600hz
and so on.....
|
|
ok, i forgot to sey 2 small details , so its gos like this:
first you must know that every freq you double is = to one octeva uper
then set your your eq bandwidth to 0.72 that is = to octeva,
then start cuting, easy ahh?
about the ratio, its depend on the way they are programmed, but who need the ratio when you got your ears!
cheers

can you clarify this.
when you cut at 50hz you will boost at 100hz?
is it like that for all EQ´s, this got me confused, as in the nyquist EQ you get a visualization of the bands and it shows that when you cut at 50hz you boost a octave higher, and when you boost you cut somewhere else(based on the octave)
so does all EQs work this way? would be glad if you could tell me or point me to a good guide.

ok, just to clear something about digital eqs, what you see is not always what you hear!.
yes, when you cut at 50hz you will boost the 100hz, but only if the bandwidth is set to 0.72 or 1.41 that is = to octeva. The wider the bandwidth the higher the freq's that will be boosted, got it?
about nyquist eq, well, in theory its all looks good and nice but as i sed already, what you see is not always what you hear in those digital eqs.
explor the sound theory deeper...cuz if you dig hard youll find what your looking for , and just to let you know that sound is not only about to know the tech stuff is also to feel it, if you dont feel it you dont know it.
and there is ALOT to know about this word, SOUND.
cheers
