Hi Travelers

When you travel around the different continents of our beautiful globe, why don't do some volunteer work while you're at it? There are many options for volunteering, and I thought it would be nice if people could tell us a little about their experiences and maybe link up some URL's to volunteer organizations.

Personally I'm in India backpacking and have never done a thing like this before. But it has been a dream of mine for many years to have the opportunity to help those who are less fortune then me.

I am (application in progress) hoping to work with http://www.idex.in which has locations in Himachal Pradesh (mountain), Rajasthan (desert) and Goa (beach). I'm hoping to start at the top North and work my self down to the South.

Volunteers work on various projects depending on the location, some of them are -

- Teaching in Primary schools

- Working in Day care center with young children

- Working in Orphanages

- Working in mentally challenged school

- English language teaching courses

- HIV/AIDS center

- Working with Snake charmers

- Community work

- Sports teaching opportunity

- Computer classes for adolescent girls

- Construction work

- Repair & maintenance work

- Painting Classes/ schools

Post some info

Peace & hope,

Thanks mista'! That means a lot to me. Thank you fr the words and energy

Well, yes. In Norway in primary School ect you do things like one week of collecting money from people by going to door to door and selling something symbolic like a pin, calander, cakes .. Norway is actually one of the countries that gives the most to needs like African hunger, water shortage ect. But of course, this is because 1. we have the money and 2. We also give to much, to wrong end points (sneeky leaders buying Rolls with the cheraty fundings.. So its never perfect, but the country does a lot of goods towards other needy countries when it comes to money and aid. Hope is always that it goes to food and not cars and guns. It doesnt help when the politicians say HI! Look at us, we are so giving, look at all the trillion rupees we are giving away. WHO gets the money?? Um, wait, let me check my FiloFax.. Im not sure, can you return tomorrow? .. anyway - Yes we actually learn a lot about raising funds to help others ect while in School. Come to think of it, thanks for reminding me. That is a good system, isnt it!

So. North to South .. haha No. I was warned by many not to do that as it collides against the seasons. So Right now Im in Poona with good ol' Osho'mushroom. Strange place, but people need guidence some way or the other.. A bit to perfect but beautiful. I was thinking of going down to Goa and start there and moove on up North But of course, rough plan, because my main plan is to have no plan, anything can happen.

About http://www.idex.in. From me they wanted 14 000 Rupees for 2 weeks, I think. I met a good English lady who told me it's better to just show up, that way you can save some money (if not so much cash - but still want to do something).

Would be awsome if people could post more links, tell stories or ...

Most of the volunteer organizations I've come across, especially in northern india/nepal/tibet, end up charging you more than you would probably spend on renting a hut and having a lazy holiday. There is always just too many middle men that have absolutely no problem taking money off you while trying to sell you something by appealing to your humanitarian side.

While looking around, I did find some nice organic farms in Ladakh. You help out on the farm, learn some of the old farming methods they still use and get put up in a ladakhi family's home. Unfortunately the last time I was up north, I got quite sick and didnt end up making it to this farm. Definitely something to look into though.

A friend of mine is being volunteer at Peace brigades international, I think I will also join in about two years on other country.

The main job for PBI here is to keep watching authorities to keep them away from hard repression.

Other friends had also worked here in Mexico with other NGO, specially inmigration ones.

I highly doubt ANYONE travelling on a shoe string budget has time to be ripped off by some 'volunteer' organisation.

If you feel ur karma is bad, fine, go help others, if it's not, don't go there because they will take advantage of you and rip you off.

It's human nature - if you're stupid enough to go dig a hole for someone when they can do it themselves - go ahead
