Doing 'business' with promoters and labels

hello music makers

i've been wondering a bit how most people handle their 'business' transactions in this scene, particularly for getting gigs with promoters they don't know or in other countries.

this seems to be a little bit of a black box from my experience, so i'm hoping that a few people will be willing to voice their opinions and preferably what they actually DO, not just what they think should be done.

so, i'm wondering a few things...

when you accept a gig, how do you organise payment? do you make the organiser sign a contract, or just on a 'handshake'? do they pay in cash or by another method? do they give you a deposit before the gig and the rest after?

i know there are some dodgy experiences with people, and sometimes these are unavoidable, but how can you try and avoid this?

for bookings, do you use a booking agent? i'm interested in something like this as i don't want to have to do all the dealings myself, but i don't mind if i have to in the end. is there a list of booking agents anywhere on the web?

how does paying for the ticket work, do they buy the ticket in your name, or do you buy it and then get the money from them?

if there are some answers to these from artists who conduct this sort of 'business' regularly, i'd love to hear from you.

thanks in advance!

dwight.

ok , lets start with whats simple , flight tickets should be bought by org. or by artist , i think is fair where is cheeaper to buy.

i will never fly somewhere paying my own ticket.. even if promised to get it back..

for set fee , half in advence is good sign.
if not , i havnt seen much places where u dont get your payment , but heard awfall stories.

now what i realy do is sometimes get only the flight money and set fee in the party.

contract is good idea , pm me if u want "generic" one

hope to cya round the globe

Well the big qualifier you said there is "international gigs".

Generally the way you start is getting gigs in different areas of your own country - you get a feel for what's involved in having someone else buy you a plane ticket, what it is like dealing with promoters, traveling, etc. But if it is in your own country there's not as much at stake if something goes wrong.

Tsabeat's advice was all pretty good, but what wasn't mentioned is networking - get in touch with other artists personally that have played for certain people. Ask around and find out what kind of experience people had playing for certain promoters.

Even though this is an international scene, it is stil a relatively small community. Network as much as you can with other artists so you can ask them what kind of experiences they have had - obviously this needs to be done in a more private setting than public boards like this.

By the time someone is getting booked for international gigs, they've probably been doing this a while and have a routine of what they are comfortable with - requiring money in advance, deposit, contract, whatever. Somethings are more important to people than others.

Well, ive just started getting international bookings in austria and brazil
Im not so experienced on this but the label that gets me these bookings makes sure contracts are signed and askes for a 50% payment upfront.

The flight for brasil is not being payed since im not a big name (yet )
But we made an arrangement that the organiser would get us a couple of gigs so we could easely cover the costs.

In the beginning you'll always have to talk about the price and what is payed for etc.
When you get more bookings and more experience, and ofcourse when you're known to the audience

Payment just depends on the organisation, but i prefer bank transfers because im paying all my taxes here in holland and it just makes it a bit more easy.           SQL: http://www.myspace.com/sqlmusic
