Neve was just an example - as Grillmaster stated already is not very cheap... around 1500$ us for a mono channel that includes full parametric eq & compression, it is a high end console, way better than say Mackie 8 bus.. As I said u can get 2 of those - and Grillmaster, RME and this are not in competition... U need both...
But it's not only Neve, there are multitude of processors and compressors and all in one machines that beef up your sound... DBX have quite a few of these products, so u can check as well on that...
About your question Mike,.. see, since the computation inside the PC is algorythmic and quite insufficient for high class recordings ( imo ), if you have a good quality mixing desk ( btw here Mackie 8 bus is good enough as well ) u can apply the eq that u need to the sound + if you have some external add on such as a quality compressor/xpander and bring it back to the PC.. What it does actually, it makes your computer a regular recording device, only to make the input and the output ( hence the need for a good quality card as well )..
I can say for sure, that while I was using the Mackie 24/8 mixing desk, I had fatter sound in the low ends than today - it is something that u can feel on a big sound system quite easily

Superglue,
From some funny reasons, again it seems to me ( and maybe I am just a paranoid ) that u want another argument / quarrel ( choose )
I personally know that most of the Israel leading trance artists use external devices to fatten the sound ( Neve, Eventhide - hope I spelled it correctly, DBX etc.. )
I also believe that Trance is a genre that helps to bring the music boundaries forward, due to the fact that it is less bounded to any rules than any other commercial genre, and u can hear today in MTV that commercial indeed effected by the underground, it just takes time.
I also believe, that to get better one has to learn from the best. I know for sure that Chemical Brothers and Mobi are not Trance producers, but they represent the fattest sound around for me... I want to do like that - that is my belief! Try to be the best as the best can be
Last thing - I was just giving advise, like I usually do here - it is from my personal knowledge, to help ppl to understand in a more quick way then by guessing certain things.. I never said I know everything and sometimes I talk about my personal point of view ( then I write - imo ). When I don't write that I talk facts .
So no need to argue just for the sake of the argument - if u want, I can pm u with the names of the artists that use external processors, but I don't believe it is necessary.. One thing tho - all of them have extremely fat sound..

'Its only trance music,' Superglue?
Its a passion for some, striving for the best sound possible is necessary! Its like a painter looking for the best brushes and paint for his creations.
And Yuli seems to be getting deep into the science - respect! Thanks for sharing your experiences, the Iboga vinyl of God Is Love sounds amazingly crisp. We can all learn off each other and elevate trance production standards -woohoo!
  Within this timeless gathering,
a shining light does dance,
lost from conscious memory,
but visible in trance!
