Considering that my bank account is constantly hemorrhaging in my efforts to acquire new music, they damned well should be!

It seems that even the big names don't make enough money.
Here's a quote from the promotional section(http://forum.isratrance.com/twisted-label-needs-your-help/), quoted from the twisted website forum :

"We are teetering on bankruptcy, and are seeking deals elsewhere…. the 12 loyal fans on this forum are not enough to sustain a record label…. How much do you think Twisted has in the bank account? Have a guess? More than $10,000 ? More than $20,000 ? Well it is actually less than $1,000….. Raj and i haven’t even been paid our advance for this album…. All the artists on twisted are seeking deals with other labels now… We can’t pay a label manager, and we can’t pay the artists…. always putting our hope in ‘just ONE more release’.... “We’ll be ok if the DVD sells”....“Surely the Shpongle CD will sell, right?”

So when even the biggest names in this genre (ok, twisted is not only chill out) don't get enough money out of it, then who will?

On the other side, I think that Simon, Benji, Raja Ram etc. are able to make a living from their live acts and djing as far as I can estimate that.
Maybe the chances are bigger to earn money with that then selling the music?

You have to get creative these days with ways to cut label overhead.           blip.fm/itranscendence

i think very few artists are in a position where they even get back the money they have invested in equipment etc. ofcourse nowerdays it's a bit cheaper to get started. but still even the basics: a powerful computer, legal software, quality speakers and a proper souncard add up to thousands of euros. not to mention the time and effort one puts into making music. i guess there are a small handful artists in this scene that might get somekind of compensation for time and effort too.
those who have expanded their territory into game, movie and tv-programme scores and/or raise healthy payments from monhtly live-sets are probably able to make a (i wish i could say decent?) living out of making music.
