lol, I meant that if the controller has infinite knobs you just don't bother in what position it stands now and just start tweaking.
But in general, I don't give a fuck to that kind of things. Its such a tiny detail in the process of making music that I really don't pay attention to that. The most important thing in any knob or fader is their strength and durability; for me it is important not to to tear them up by the roots while I'm in trance.

Rotary encoder knobs are great. I have a controller with decent knobs and one with cheap clicky knobs.
The clicky knobs may seem to suck but I've found good uses for them, mostly using Ableton.
Here are my good uses for cheap clicky plastic knobs in Ableton:
1.) Scene scrolling
2.) Clip scrubbing
3.) Global quantize change
4.) MIDI CC#s that involve scrolling through preset/parameter menus
5.) On/Off switches
6.) Cycling from one vst to another in a chain
... and more.
Ironically in parameters like these, the problem with "good" encoders is that you can scroll through settings too fast sometimes, which could be undesirable sometimes, such as when using clip scrubbing or parameters with only a few settings, such as changing your LFO from a sine to a triangle.
I used to hate the clicky knobs on my Axiom but I've grown to like them when I use them for utility style functions in Ableton.

Well You have all certainly convinced me that rotary encoders are useful. And Makus, I would agree that durability is first priority.
This has been a big help and will certainly give me a lot to think about when I am choosing a new controller, thanks for all the great input! |

I like the Rotary encoder knobs as well. Some controllers have a "Velocity Curve" adjustment to have it either smooth, or to snap into place. Try playing with those settings if they are available. |
